pulley holding tool substitute

hi people,
I have an 88 carrera with everything in the back out. AC, motor mounts exhaust system lower pulley cover etc. I am trying to replace the pulley seal on the crankshaft and don't want to spend 200 + for tool 9236 to hold the pulley while I loosen the nut on the pulley. Can anyone out there tell me a cheaters method to hold that pulley. I have the tools to pull the seal and press in a new one. I just need to hold that pulley. Any ideas.
Thanks, Damon

You can also use a "flywheel lock" by putting a couple double box end wrenches on the flywheel-clutch bolts and the engine case studs. The flywheel lock + an impact should do the trick easily.

Its possible I'm not as smart as I hoped. I should mention that the engine is still in the car.

Are you trying to loosen the crank pulley?
If so.......try: trans in 5th gear, helper w/ foot on brakes, break bolt loose. Set e brake for good measure, too.

Yes My ultimate goal is to replace the crank pully seal. I was relacing my alternator and discovered all kinds of cracks in housing and fan blades bent. One thing turned into another so the old while your at it syndrome hit me. Now I'm trying to replace everything that is or might leak oil in the future while I have it all apart and waiting for parts.
