Relocate A/C Controls

Now that I have removed the console from my SC, I'm looking for ideas on where to place the A/C controls. Didn't have any luck using the "search" function.

I noticed on Patrick Motorsports website that they have some cars with controls (Carrera?) mounted in place of the ash tray.

Are the Carrera controls an upgrade the SC? Other options?

All ideas welocme....... Thanks in advance.

If you can find a set (maybe even including the kneepad vents) from an earlier car, the controls are there.

BZ911SC 08-05-2008 07:58 AM

Are you selling the console you removed?

Pazuzu 08-05-2008 08:23 AM

I planned on taking the bracket that the controls mount to, and screwing it to the bottom surface of the ashtray. You just need to invert the whole thing (I don't think you can actually swap the dials as well, but I can't remember).

I have an early set of the knee pad replacement vents. They need work. I have been wanting to get to this project for awhile, yet they still sit in my garage in a box. Perhaps you could resurrect them and get some use out of them. If interested, email me and we can discuss details.

Shane,

Thanks for the offer, but I now have an '88 dash (larger vents) and plan to swap out the small side vents for larger '86-'89 vents and knee pads.

fritzgator 08-05-2008 12:33 PM

i noticed a pic on here the other day, and it looked like the car's A/C controls, were mounted to the side of the drivers seat slider rail.

ShakinJoe 08-05-2008 12:55 PM

I have got one from an '87. Are you interested?

ShakinJoe 08-05-2008 01:04 PM

lindbhr,

I have just removed mine as well. While I am deleting the A/C, I would still like to keep the Hazards and Auto Door locks. I took the radio out and I will most likely mount the door lock switch there. I went to RS bumer and lost my foglights, so I will relocate the Hazard switch there. There are also a few blanks that you can use left of the foglights and the Cigar lighter if you need to.

Here is the link to my project; 438 lbs gone in 5 days

I might be interested, but still fact finding at this point. I'll keep you in mind.

Thanks,

very timely I am thinking about the same thing. Perhaps a blank in the ash tray area is a good solution. Love to see pics of what other people have done.

lindbhr,

I recently did the same thing, took the SC console out of my '76 930, I prefer the look without the console. I just made a simple L bracket out of some sheet metal and mounted to the bottom of the ashtray bracket. I have a later ashtray in mine with plastic bracket. I also put the blower speed on the left because that is the one I use the most, seems more logical to me on that side.

Everyone,

Thanks for all of the feedback.

Paul,

I had something in mind similar to what you have done. Thanks for the picture. Also, I like the radio delete. I have no speakers, just a head unit, so I need to make a change of some sort.

Elombard 08-05-2008 03:19 PM

That looks fab Paul, I much prefer the look w/out console.

One of the previous owners relocated them to here...

That seems like the best approach. That temp knob has that special hard cable, so there's only a limited amount that you can move it...

Actually, that's not a bad idea either. Perhaps one of the later-style auto-head consoles in the center can be modified to hold the switches / knobs...

It's really kinda neat. Whoever did it sure did it right. I mean it's a nice finished box and not a 'L' shaped piece of alum or something.

PS - No iPhone, yet..... ;)

Here is what I am in the process of doing. Removed clunky old stock center console - installed Hargett shifter and wanted to keep A/C. Found this compact dune buggy counsole on eBay. New and nicely made.
Measures approximately 5" wide. Too bright for my tastes so will probably coat it with black wrinkle finish. EPS - Tucsonhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1217983835.jpg

Wow that is a nice box, I wonder if the PO fabbed it or found something from another car that worked?

rusnak 08-06-2008 04:17 PM

yeah, if you can find the P.O. ask him if he contracts out his work, cause from the looks of it, he has skills.

wcc 08-06-2008 04:32 PM

I'm not sure to either one of those questions but I can tell you that 99% of the paperwork that I have is from Precision Motion Kravig Engineering in Riverside, CA. Maybe that's a good place to start because I don't think this guy did anything on his own based on the amount of paperwork.

rusnak 08-06-2008 05:06 PM

it would be on one of their invoices. Any other trick bits in the car?

DG624 06-27-2012 10:53 AM

I would remove the console since it is broken and does not look great but I was wondering where to put the emergency flasher, A/C, radio fader... If there was a nice small panel like the one shown then it could fit a variety of things. I guess I could eliminate the lighter and use the empty plug space for some items and put the A/C between the seats.

Now I would like to eliminate the headlight washer, sunroof switches with blanks. Has anyone done this?

RSTarga 06-27-2012 11:56 AM

How did he run the temp sensor to the evaporator? Thats a really long run for that hard line. The box looks like for one of those aftermarket a/c units that are used for hot rods.

DG624 09-19-2012 03:12 PM

Has anyone done a relocation of their console knobs (flasher, rear window heater) to the dash?

Nice. I started to do just that, but too much work pulling carpet, etc. and hacking into the tunnel. Went back to original console set-up but rewarded myself with installing a lamp to let me know when compressor is activated. One wire to switch blade contact on thermo control and one wire to ground.

DG624 09-21-2012 06:41 AM

I already replaced the entire carpet and know the problems with removing and replacing the console. I just don't think it does much...just a knob holder. If I can relocate these knobs then it would clean up the interior.
