915 Transmission Problems - Please Help!
As I was taking my Sunday evening drive in my '78 911 SC, I stopped at a light and all of a sudden couldn't get it into 1st or 2nd gear. I put it into 3rd and finally got it home. Now, it goes into 1st with difficulty and 2nd is longer there, instead it feels like 4th. All other gears seem fine. I will further inspect the bushings and cable tomorrow. Also, the car has 107,000 miles and was recently purchased.
Does anyone know what the problem may be? Thanks in advance. P.S. I hit a big pothole right before the incident (I have the car set low to the ground). Last edited by LeakProof; 08-03-2008 at 06:01 PM.. |

The bushings are the first thing to look at. Under the shifter and at the rear coupler. The pothole might've jarred the coupler which was held together by a thread.

Leakproof,
Welcome to the Board. You possibly have a misaligned shift coupler. Do a search on Shift Coupler adjustment and find a thread by JW. The shift coupler is located under the access cover behind the ebrake on the floor just in front of the rear seats, there are four screws holding the cover in place, open the cover and you will see the shift coupler. See if it is loose. Let us know, what you find. I will find a link for you and post it in a few minutes. Shane

snbush67, thank you for the link. I will open the tunnel and check for any obvious problems. Also, I've been meaning to change out the bushings and cable anyhow.
I will let you know what happens. Last edited by LeakProof; 08-03-2008 at 06:34 PM.. |

That link helped a lot, thank you. The car now shifts much better. I thought I did some serious transmission damage on Sunday. The adjustment took all of about 30 seconds. However, I believe my bushings should be replaced due to some slop and play. Also, I adjusted the forward and aft on shift coupler back to what I believe is the original location. It seems like I've picked up a few more horses since the adjustment... ahh probably my imagination. There seems to be a slight hesitation shifting into 1st and 2nd gear, which I beleive is normal. Thanks again for all the help.
