Queue Jim Stafford's "I don't like spiders and snakes...". I was pulling a split rail gate post out of the ground last Saturday using the two holes (the slots where the rails fit) as "lift points" with my hand inside. Got the post out, and THEN I spotted the biggest black widow spider I've ever seen inside one of them (the size of my thumbnail)...at least I had gloves on, but I had one of those moments too

Less brakes, more gas!
|
hehehehee Living on the edge of teh Florida State Preserve I'm always keenly aware of things that slither... my fear is that I'll be under the car and look over right into the juicy mouth of something like a cotton mouth or coral snake... I've had to chase a few black racers and rat snakes out of the garage, but thankfully nothing venomous yet...

Or used the snakes to protect other "cargo" in the box.

What do black snakes find edible inside the smugglers box? Might this have grown from an infant-sized snake?
Or is it just a passing shelter for the evening? Take a look in the tunnel and let us know what you find. It's a larger compartment. ![]() Sherwood |

I would have kept it as a pet
![]() Since I have had pet snakes all my life (now my son does), I would say it was feeling comfort from the elements, the hot sun and it's enemies. I'm sure it was bummed out that he was taken out of his new cousy home. If it was a pure, shiney black snake, it was probably a black racer which I'm surprised it didn't jet out as soon as it was discovered. You're also lucky it didn't bite the sh__ out of your hand. Wild ones can be mean. If your lucky it'll stick around your house, they love eating mice and rats.

Ok, not a snake story, but several years ago wile getting dressed on the edge of my bed, leaning over to put on my socks, contacts not in, I looked out my window and said to myself, my that is a big dog in the front yard. I squinted and as the “dog” moved closer to the house it became clear it was a BEAR! It was never seen again.

Any snake that surprises the hell out of me is a dead snake, venomous or not.

some non-venomous snakes will actually kill and eat the venomous ones - not to mention rats, etc.
if you are sure it is non-venomous, then I'd let it co-exist somewhere nearby THis is the second recent post on snakes. Human fear/hatred of snakes is deeply ingrained and surely has a genetic component. Think about it - what animal can come after you while you are safely up a tree? Only snakes if you are fairly large (Monkey-eating Eagles can get your kids of course). People have done experiments on wild chimps by putting out pieces of rope painted to look like snakes. The chimps go into a frenzy - screaming, and attacking first with stones, followed up by closer attacks with sticks. "Sticks and stones..." |
