901 shift adjustment

Do the instructions for shifter adjustment ,as given in Wayne's book ,apply to the 901 (1969)? He says to place the car in first gear, then to put the shifter into the upper left-hand corner of the shift patter. That is reverse in a 901. I assume he means to have just the shifter move to the upper left, while the car is locked in first.

JW has stated that moving the shift lever in neutral to the entreme left(holding there) tighten the coupler while in extreme right(clockwise from rear of car).Seems like JW is on target but Wayne's advise is opposite. Can anyone help?

Unfortunately, 901 coupler adjustment is a little like typing with one finger - I think that's called hunt and peck. The tricky part of the adjustment is to maintain vertical at the base of the shift lever, while going side to side with the coupler/lever. I've always done the process by putting the lever in second (or at least where you think second is), snug the clamp bolt, sit in the car, start it and see if you've got 2nd or 4th. Then go from there, I can clearly remember taking 901/911 cars for no fewer than three test drives before getting the adjustment right. You must have; (1) patience, and (2) the ability to remember where you were, and how much you moved the coupler in relation to the shift rod. Do all adjustments with the trans in a known gear, and good luck with it! Oh, shift very gently until you know you won't hit reverse while moving forward!

I would put the gear in 4th. Definitively 2nd or 4th because it will allow you to remove easily and then apply some pressure in the right direction to push it back (the trans linkage won't move backward).

Don't forget to paint a mark on the linkage and coupler.

I don't know if i making a lot of sense...

I put the box in 2nd and then set the shifter in second, just a hair off the lockout guide. Works first try every time.

Thanks for the replies. I tried the JW technique. I locked the shift lever in neutral and to the far left(tied off with bungee cord) and then turned the shift coupler as far to the right (passenger) as possible. Tighten bolts. Shifts in garage . Will try tonight after downpours stop. If not working well, will go to second gear suggestion. Stay tuned.

That is the method that I have always used. It usually is right on first time. The 901 can be finicky sometimes though!!
