soft window targa kit should I build them

after getting my new 911, while going through it fine a fine comb,, I find out that it is a soft window, that had been changed to a fix window ,, after some research I found that the hardest part to find is the handles , the rest can be easily made, after research I found a unlimited source of the handles ,

so now I am considering making a kit, but couple of questions

how many people would be interested ?
what is a fair price for a kit that would include NOS handles and reproduced other part , without the vinyl ( it easily available from other vendors)

any opinion?

GBG1000 08-12-2008 04:05 PM

I would be interested- but not necessarily a buyer. What does it look like, how does it work, and approx how much would it cost?

freezing14 08-12-2008 05:48 PM

swt

it would be like the original targa soft window, either for the real SWT or retrofit
search around there is picture
you can buy the vinyl for some other guy ( lto get better price)
I would supply all the other component, the 2 handles, the2 bearing sleeves, the 2 bars upper ahd lower, and the 3 mounting nut for the back, the aluminium side spacer and instruction

essentially all the hard parts to find

as for the price I have no idea yet, I do not know what the parts go for (too rare), the vinyl is about 250$ , butr i'll post pricing once I have a reference to go by,

soft top

I would be very interested to buy the conversion

freezing14 08-12-2008 08:05 PM

so far i found out that the set of latch (not perfect sells for about 400) NOS surely more , mine would be in the same range and then i'll add the rest , i'll make one for me then a secvond one and offer it to the first one in line for the determined price

Are these going to be made availible from our host?

For $1800, you'd be wise to post some pics and more details. You also should add the vinyl window too. Why not make a real conversion kit that gives your customer all that they need?

..........there was time I was looking for handles and they were impossible to locate.
Ones that was offered to me ,was rentals for reproduction purpose ( had that ability ). As for sale ? seen once in 1200$ range

I placed a WTB awhile back for the handles and they were used and offered to me for $400 and another for $450.

I am sure Porsche did not custom make the handles. Freezing probably found a more common application (on a MB, VW or Opel?) that uses the same handles and bought some NOS.

I once found out that a run of the mill CA car with smog pump uses the same oil filler neck than the tri-carb or OAI optioned muscle car of the same make and era. All I had to do is get all the beater oil filler necks from the CA junk yard and sell them as super rare oil filler necks to those guys who need all correct parts for an OAI or tri carb vehicle. ;) Wasn't a huge money maker but $80 oil filler necks were a quick buck (easy to ship too) on Ebay.

soft window kit

ok there is profit but do you know how much it cost to have jigs made to reproduce all the other parts

the kit includes everything you need to put a soft window on your targa( the the handle , the receiver , the 2 hoops, the 3 special bolt for the back and the window( vinyl etc )

here are picture of all the parts but the window ( wich i buy from a reputable specialist) and since i buy a lot i get a better deal and i passs it on to you)
UPS left a note on my door ( they have arrived) they will also be selling the kit from me

last time i saw one for sale it went for 1400US( just the hardware) and the window cost 600$ so do the math

i will be posting picture of it installed in a couple of days, and there is already one sold in Italy

regards

This could be a really promising solution for those of us who own and love to restore these VERY rare targas. Might be even more promising if you focus on those with non original soft window targas, and figure out how to convince that audience to use your factory handles together with those non original bent aluminum (the factory used bent steel) top supports. They might not know, or care about, the difference. I have a couple E targas and think it would be cool to spend $1,500.00 for a kit to make one of them feel like a real convertible. I am not going to cut corners and save +/- $500.00 on non-original Porsche soft window parts on my $60,000 '68S or $100,000 '67S targas, but I wouldn't give it a second thought on that E.

BTW, Stoddard sells a nice folding rear window for $574.95 ea. Don't know what their 'volume discount' would be.

soft window kit

here is a picture of the window , ill be posting picture of it installed within a couple of days , its cold here ( canada) and it takes a long time to warm the garage up and woking with cold vinyl is a bad receipe

by te way all the inner structure is galvanized steel ( like the original ), not aluminium

Looks great, I can't wait to see what it looks like installed. I'm picking up a swb targa tomorrow that I would love to restore with a soft window, I'll be keeping an eye on this!

That is a very nice fit to the top. I like the kit. I would be all over this product if I had not already converted my targa.
