Dash Install
 

HI,

Im rebuilding my 1975 Targa at the moment and im wondering if there is anyway that the dash can go in AFTER the front window as im waiting on my Dash to come back,
As for the Rear Targa Glass / Rubber, What a pain of a job......im getting no - where !! !! one thing is gettiing the rubber on all the way around and then try keep it there and insert the chrome trim... i have read lots but never thought it would be this difficult...

My understanding is that it's "impossible" to install the dash after the windscreen (windshield) is installed. We have a local glass shop that replaced my front windshield and they also confirmed this. They said they really hate to replace the rear Targa glass, so I figure if professional glass installers hate to do it, I'm not even going to try.... Good luck, you're a brave man!

Targa rear windows are probably the hardest window to install in the automotive world. Period.

Good luck, but I'm under the impression the trim goes in before you pull the rubber thru to the inside with a cord. I don't think it is possible to push the trim in after the fact. I've been wrong before, however.

While Targa rear windows are a good bit of work they can be done with a little background reading and prep work.. There are a lot of good articles on this forum that can be of great help..

You can see the orange tie-down strap which held light pressure on the window while I pulled the cord.

You need to install the seal, defrost wiring and insert chrome trim before installing the window. Mine took about 2 hours prep and 2 to complete the install.. but it did take 2 attempts.

Every Targa is a bit different. The guy that did mine was recommended by every Porsche dealer in the DFW area, he'd been doing them for about 25 years. He said some went in with little fanfare in an hour or so, some (like mine) took him several tries over three hours.

Just to confirm: the dash has a 'flap' that needs to be attached to the dash structure with sheet metal screws. That is the main reason the dash must be replaced with the windshield out. However, getting a 911 windshield in and out is trivial once you've done it a couple of times.

Thanks for all your comment guys, Would it be a better bet to install the trim when the glass in in place, just before the chord gets pulled ??? (rear targa glass)
I dissconnected the defroster wires in the engine bay so i have room to play with there !!

You will never get the trim in after the glass is in place. You have to have the trim in the seal before seating the seal in the car.

YES, the dash needs to be installed BEFORE the windshield is installed.
That trim piece is a compression type fit, and once the glass is in the sealing gasket, it would be almost impossible to install the trim pieces later. Good luck!! Tony.
