Not Another Torque Wrench Thread!

Mine is different though......I know it will be snap-on.

It will be my first one, and have no idea what type and size should be the first. so what model should I get?

Their web page is here

1/2 for tires

3/8 for nearly everything else

+1...
Keep in mind the values that you want to measure. The mid range for the torque wrench should be around that value.

I've searched threads, but it sounded like the one through PP was the best deal.

Snap-on is free, so sorry wayne, only 3 orders this month.....

I guess here is my real question

#1

or #2

billybek 08-24-2008 01:52 PM

I would go with #2. You will regret not having ratcheting action with the fixed wrench #1.
Consider this as well, many of the torque ratings that you will find on a Porsche are lower than the 20 ft/lbs that is the bottom end of your second selection. My Snap-On has a bottom end of 5 ft/lbs and a top end of 75.
It is a flex head, but couldn't find my glasses to read the model #.
Now, let the rest of us know how you get Snap On stuff for free!!;)

Is it ok to get a 3/8 and then adapters to make it 1/4 or 1/2?

imcarthur 08-24-2008 02:53 PM

I've snapped several adapters. 1/2" 50-250 is the single best bet imho. Get a good one but never, ever use it to undo things. Not even once! That's what breaker bars are for. I just bought my 2nd so I learned the hard way.

sure but it -of course - does not change the fundamental accuracy of , nor the range of, the wrench.

it would be very cumbersome to use a 3/8 + extender to do the wheels

1/4 is just not needed for 99.5% of owners.

+1 but wheels lug/nut instead of tires :)

Is #3 , with 5-75 lbs, a better option for my porsche then?

It doesn't seem as important to me to get the 15 lbs bolts at the perfect torque- am I wrong about that?

I can use my credit card reward points for Snap-on gift cards :)

billybek 08-24-2008 07:49 PM

I would say that it is important, but I have a biased opinion on this matter!!;)
edit:
Having a top end of 75 ft/lbs probably means you will need two torque wrenches as mentioned before. 1/2" and 3/8" drive...
If you have both, you have most of the range covered.
