How long can a (crashed) GT3 be stored outside?

How long can a (crashed) GT3 survive the elements outside... in a dirt field... in Canadian weather... before the environment starts to destroy it?

I know it's a strange question, but explaining the situation would take too long. Thanks.

~ Randy.

In Canadian weather, in a dirt field? I would say about 20 min. to 1 hour.

old man neri 09-05-2008 02:46 PM

Exposed metal will start to rust. If there are leaks in the cabin then water will get in. However, any exposed metal is damaged metal that would have to be replaced anyways. Any pictures? 'Crashed' is a very broad term. Are we talking fender bender or roll over total?

Edit: It also depends on the time of year and the location, Canada is a big area with very different climate zones.

Spydermon 09-05-2008 02:53 PM

A rollover in central Canada.

How long before the very-expensive motor becomes worthless? ... a month, a year?

3.2 CAB 09-05-2008 03:17 PM

As long as the engine is somewhat covered by the lid, or even a plastic garbage bag, I would think the engine would do quite well, for a fairly long time. But... without pictures of the damage, it really is hard to say for sure. Good luck!! Tony.

TRE Cup 09-05-2008 04:16 PM

take the motor out of it, convert your RS clone to accept it and giggle yourself like a silly schoolgirl when you hit the loud pedal :)

old man neri 09-05-2008 04:57 PM

The motor will probably last just as long as anywhere else. Central Canada is quite dry in the summer and in the winter is quite cold with snow. I think the motor would be fine except maybe for some surface rust here and there. Just get some pics because any damage will be external.

You need to tell us the whole story for any real help.

Aurel 09-05-2008 05:35 PM

I`d buy a big piece of tarp and cover the whole thing, if it can`t be moved in a safe place...

MT930 09-05-2008 06:57 PM

Jeez! if you can afford to crash GT-3 you can get it in a cheap storage unit. Why create more work when time to tackle its parting or repair. Water and sun do no favors to cars. I would pull the engine right away and keep it in a climate controlled space, if the chassis is toast.

Spydermon 09-05-2008 07:51 PM

Okay, here's the story. A guy I know bought a crashed GT3 at an auction in Minnesota. But being the good-old-boy that he is, doesn't know what he has. He thinks it's just another Porsche. He doesn't realize it's an exotic Porsche... not your everyday 911. So he has it just sitting in a dirt field thinking he has a pot of gold but treating it like an old Chevy truck.

Dave B... I like your idea! But, will it fit in a 906 ; )

So why not explain to him what a GT3 is, if he's a friend of yours? He can't be that dumb. Or are you hoping to take it out from under him before he figures it out?

Put a tarp on the ground under it, and get a temporary shelter of some sort. I don't reccomend wrapping the rascal. Consider that animals will be attracted to it, and mothball the pi$$ out of it.

Do not delay. Once water gets in, rust will be your least problem.

You could buy this one for cheap...brand new 997 GT3 rolled at a DE.

Karma for using electrical tape for numbers...

jwetering 09-06-2008 07:36 AM

What did he pay for the yellow wreck?

EarlyPorsche 09-06-2008 07:37 AM

How do you do that!? I mean the 997! I am glad the cabin was strong enough to holdup and hopefully they are fine but how did it roll. I always thought rolls would be difficult on a 911 because they are so low and W I D E but I guess its not that hard at all.

Spydermon 09-06-2008 07:53 AM

Jasper - $28K.

He's not a friend, just a guy I know.

HHmm. I've been watching GT3's and good ones can be had for mid 70's...well used ones for low to mid 60's.

Figure he's $20K+ into repairing this one and it barely makes sense, maybe parting it out he'll break even.

Perhaps buy a 1999 with a blown motor for less than $20K and build a cool sleeper but he'd still be $60K into it by the time he's done I'd think

One thing's for sure...I'd be stripping the good parts off and putting them in safe storage.

TRE Cup 09-06-2008 08:45 AM

I think that motor belongs in a cayman or boxster shell- would make for a heck of a road burner or track car. With boxsters going well south of 20k, one can find a blown motor car for less than 9k.

Yellow car: Trouble is 28k is too much to pay for motor and electronics with hopes of recouping something for the rest to cover your delivery , teardown, and storage expenses

I think the 906 would be a lil a$$ heavy with that motor and a g50 back there ;0

jwetering 09-06-2008 09:19 AM

There's brakes, wheels, seats...door panels, interior stuff, instruments, maybe a good panel on there somewhere to salvage, exhaust system, suspension bits. I think he could part it out and break even, maybe even make a few bucks (emphasis on few) but it's a hard way to make a little bit of money.

Hot rod boxster eh? That'll mess up you fancy haircut.

Spydermon 09-06-2008 09:44 AM

Dave --- yeah heavier, but more grip! ...yeeeehaaaa ....oohhhhh, sssssshhhhhhiiiiiiiittttttt.

aigel 09-06-2008 07:34 PM

What I have found is the surface it stands on is most important. If it is grass or dirt, you are going to see fast decay. It keeps the moisture and the car never will be dry underneath. If you have concrete or asphalt, it will be much better.

My bet is that the car will be loosing some of its parts to weather within 3 months independent of the surface underneath. A lot of the $ to be made back is in the interior and that will be the first thing to go.

I would not have paid 28k for that heap. The math does not come out in your favor. Even if you get a bad engine 996 and convert it, you will be in over 50k.

Jandrews 09-06-2008 08:00 PM

Yeah...if the guy "doesn't know his Porsche's, and he bought this thing for $27K, why didn't he just buy a nice 996 for $27K? A crashed GT3 is a GREAT find, but only if you can take advantage of it economically for under $15K or so. Who in the world, who doesn't know Porsche's would buy just ANY "random" Porsche for $27K in a wrecked condition?

There is a 996 GT3 in this area that has been outside for over two years. It is spinning on a "car dealer" type of carousel for all passing traffic to see. Quite a sad site, as it was wrecked at RA and part of an insurance fraud case. The body shop it sits in front of occasionally pulls parts off of it when they're in a bind . . . no rust as of yet.
