How long can a (crashed) GT3 be stored outside?
How long can a (crashed) GT3 survive the elements outside... in a dirt field... in Canadian weather... before the environment starts to destroy it?
I know it's a strange question, but explaining the situation would take too long. Thanks. ~ Randy. |

In Canadian weather, in a dirt field? I would say about 20 min. to 1 hour.

Exposed metal will start to rust. If there are leaks in the cabin then water will get in. However, any exposed metal is damaged metal that would have to be replaced anyways. Any pictures? 'Crashed' is a very broad term. Are we talking fender bender or roll over total?

As long as the engine is somewhat covered by the lid, or even a plastic garbage bag, I would think the engine would do quite well, for a fairly long time. But... without pictures of the damage, it really is hard to say for sure. Good luck!! Tony.

The motor will probably last just as long as anywhere else. Central Canada is quite dry in the summer and in the winter is quite cold with snow. I think the motor would be fine except maybe for some surface rust here and there. Just get some pics because any damage will be external.

Jeez! if you can afford to crash GT-3 you can get it in a cheap storage unit. Why create more work when time to tackle its parting or repair. Water and sun do no favors to cars. I would pull the engine right away and keep it in a climate controlled space, if the chassis is toast.

Okay, here's the story. A guy I know bought a crashed GT3 at an auction in Minnesota. But being the good-old-boy that he is, doesn't know what he has. He thinks it's just another Porsche. He doesn't realize it's an exotic Porsche... not your everyday 911. So he has it just sitting in a dirt field thinking he has a pot of gold but treating it like an old Chevy truck.

So why not explain to him what a GT3 is, if he's a friend of yours? He can't be that dumb. Or are you hoping to take it out from under him before he figures it out?

How do you do that!? I mean the 997! I am glad the cabin was strong enough to holdup and hopefully they are fine but how did it roll. I always thought rolls would be difficult on a 911 because they are so low and W I D E but I guess its not that hard at all.

HHmm. I've been watching GT3's and good ones can be had for mid 70's...well used ones for low to mid 60's.
Figure he's $20K+ into repairing this one and it barely makes sense, maybe parting it out he'll break even. Perhaps buy a 1999 with a blown motor for less than $20K and build a cool sleeper but he'd still be $60K into it by the time he's done I'd think One thing's for sure...I'd be stripping the good parts off and putting them in safe storage.

I think that motor belongs in a cayman or boxster shell- would make for a heck of a road burner or track car. With boxsters going well south of 20k, one can find a blown motor car for less than 9k.
Yellow car: Trouble is 28k is too much to pay for motor and electronics with hopes of recouping something for the rest to cover your delivery , teardown, and storage expenses I think the 906 would be a lil a$$ heavy with that motor and a g50 back there ;0
