Method for reinstalling shift coupler
I took out my shift coupler today to see if I could improve the shift quality and as expected it was quite worn. The bushings holes were very oblong, allowing for about 2-3mm of play forward and back. I ordered new bushing from our host but since they ship on Monday, I wanted to reinstall the coupler. Before I did however, I cut some plastic and jammed it in the extra space in the bushing holes as an experiment to see if I could feel any less slop when shifting. It was a bit tighter but while installing it, I was wondering if I was doing it right. I was guessing not because it required both hands and my right foot. While in the back seat, I pushed the shifter into the 1st postition with my foot (I parked the car in 1st) and tightened the bolt on the shaft connecting to the coupler. At first it had some trouble shifting into all gears but after a little massaging, all gears were fine and I took it for an unproblematic drive. I was wondering what the preferred method is for reinstalling the coupler. Should the trans be in neutral or a gear when doing this or something I havent considered. When I get the bushings I will be doing this again. Thanks
Oh and everyone loves a pic so heres a recent one ![]() |

Wayne's book suggests that method. You can also use 3rd.
