911R Debate Part II...
Center lubed cams or not? This car at Tony's (see other thread) does not have the center lube cams. Every 911R I've seen (and every early race motor from Porsche) has had these cams in there.
Can anyone dig up info on this? I haven't been able to find anything except a bunch of pictures of 911Rs showing center lubed cams... -Wayne

Wayne,
Just off the top of my head... I can't tell from your photos if they have added Carrera oil-fed tensioners to the engine. If so, they may have changed the cams to use the later style covers with the boss for the oil line. JR |

No, the Carrera oil-fed tensioners were not used on any race engines, as far as I know. That's a production car part. I'm talking about the race-cam center lubrication system.
Anyone? -Wayne

Wayne, I'd go with what you know. There seems to be some issues with this car and I wouldn't be surprised.... well, I'll leave that to the experts.
I tore down one center lube cammed motor which was actually a '64 according to the 2xx Registry (whatever that number is) and it was an aluminum case, sand cast. Rick Cabel has the motor if you need any more info on one of the earliest. |

I know that there were no race engines, or any engines for that matter, built with the pressure fed tensioners in those days. What I was saying was this: perhaps they rebuilt the engine and elected to use the later tensioners for added reliabilty and gave up the center lubed cams to accomplish it. The covers that have the boss for the center lube fitting don't have one for the later tensioner line. Maybe you could modify one but I've never actually seen such a thing. Other than that, I can see no reason why someone would get rid of the center lubed cams. JR |

The 911R engine was basically a 906 engine, and the 906 had center-lubed cams, wouldn't it stand to reason that the 911R should have them as well?

I seem to recall this car was raced extensively in the '70's as an IMSA car with modified bodywork & interior.
It eventually went to Japan in the late '80's & was subsequently sold without its original engine & gearbox ...
