Flywheel Pilot Bearing Lubricant Question
I have installed a new pilot bearing in my flywheel (78 911sc). The bearing is a OEM Porsche part and appears dry. What type of lubricant should I use? How much should I use. Thanks

porsche sells optimoly high pressure grease #000.043.024.00. it's for things like pilot bearings and clutch cross-shaft bearings that may never see grease again.

I'm starting to search for a members name on the forum instead of searching for an interesting topic. I wonder if this is a problem with electrical circuits in area between my ears. Could be pitting in ground connection. Salt air has led to problems in the past. Need to use the Fluke VOM attached to each ear lobe and see what voltage drop reading is.

John,
Is there a non Porsche similar substance. Just called the dealer and they said it would take 5 days to get and I had to buy something like $50 worth of the stuff. I want to put my engine back in this weekend Ronin not quite sure how to answer you but I can loan you a fluke ;-) osidak |

possibly points grease. it looks about the same. you only need a bit of it to lube the needles.

I have been using a high-temperature (NLGI #2 rating) EP moly grease suitable for CV-joints in pilot bearings for over 32 years with no problems ... like Swepco 101. You don't want to put an excessive amount in there, because ... if it is squeezed out by the transaxle input shaft, centrifugal force will see to it that it will soon be lubricating the flywheel and clutch plate, causing slippage!

I tried to get some Olista Longtime EP grease (for theclutch cross-shaft) from a Porsche dealer and was told it can't be shipped- hazardous material. What's up with that? What's the big deal? It's grease, not liquid nitrogen. I just ended up getting some Dow Corning 1292 Long Life Bearing Grease. Which was SHIPPED to me! Oh my god.

what about T.O. bearing?
Just to avoid starting a new thread, what should be used when re-packing throwout bearing? Same stuff? I usually just replace them, but I will have motor-trans out and not planning on clutch at this time, was told that if TO bearing looks good and not too old, just repack it. Opinions?
Also, what is clutch cross-shaft bearing? Part of linkage/ pivot mechanism? Last edited by speeder; 12-22-2001 at 05:29 PM.. |

Also don't want to start another thread but on my 88 3.2 the pilot bearing in pressed in and in looking at the Porsche Reference catalogue it looks like it's bolted in. Is this b/c the PO converting the car to a Turbo Clutch? I've installed the new pilot bearing where the old one was but can't really tell exactly how far in it needs to be. I'm going to try to get it about in the middle, neither proud of the flywheel or depressed, but if it needs to be a little one way or the other I'd appreciate a heads up before I install it.
One more thing, the new one I have is sealed...no need to lubricate it...correct? TIA
