911SC Exhaust Decisions

I've owned my '81 Euro Targa for 22 years. Its a keeper, so when I found out that I need to repair the broken heat shield on the cat it led me to think about the entire exhaust system. My mechanic tells me that the original heat exchanger flanges and studs are shot. No leaks yet, but inevitable. If I'm going to go through the expense of drilling out and replacing the studs, I want to redo everything and get it over with. I would appreciate advice/opinions re: the following:

• Used OEM heat exchangers vs. aftermarket
• Dansk pre-muffler vs. straight pipe vs. aftermarket cat

I've thought about switching to a dual in/out setup, but have decided that I really want to keep the car as original as possible.

The car already has a stainless Dansk sport muffler.

Thanks.

If you are staying with stock HE style I would source some nice used units and maybe have them coated or at least cleaned up. I have thrown more those away then I can remember so don't pay to much.

Then I would suggest a premuffler and a nice 1in 1 out and it does not have to be dansk as all you are paying for is the name not higher quality then any other brand exhaust components..

I have been there on drilling studs that is No fun. best of luck

I have stock heat exchangers and muffler from an 80SC. Let me know if you are interested.

I just cut the heat shield off my cat. It was rattling. Should be good for years.

Just don't park in tall grass.

wow great video. I need that on my website!

However the original poster does not want ssi's from what it sounds like(no pun intended) so a nice premuffler is the way to go with those nickel HE

Thanks, all. I may also change the Dansk sport exhaust because the size and angle of the 84 mm tip will melt my rear fog light. I've moved it to the right side of the car because from what I can tell some Euro models had rear fog lights on both sides. Still, I prefer the OEM tip...

Which pre-muffler should I consider?

Was illegal to have two I was told, however, in England, they were on the R side, on the continent on the L.

well I will be biased to mine so I can't be much help but the fabspeeds don't have a good merg collector so the o2 does not sample both sides. the dansk is a little better I designed our unit looking at features of both and refining them for Our production pre-muffler I would stay away from the vertex offered ones they don't fit well

Depending on what you decide to do, if you end up wanting to freshen up your heat exchangers and CAT, I sent mine off the JET-HOT. For less than $300 they return a great product that holds up well.

I have a M&K 1 in and 1 out muffler from Ben. It has just enough sound, but it's not obnoxious and no droning at higher RPM's.

Thanks, guys. A lot to consider. One thing I don't quite understand: if the OEM HEs are stainless, why would anyone bother to plate them or otherwise coat them? Is it to add a durable finish, or is it more about aesthetics, i.e. achieving the look of polished stainless? Can you just media blast the OEM units?

Also, are the OEM (or any aftermarket product) flanges stainless or just regular steel? Is this difference to compensate for expansion/contraction?

We only use stainless flanges so I can't speak for all of the manufacturers
