Oil leak, need help

So...continued from a previous thread, I just did a valve adjustment and replaced my covers/gaskets/hardware and put in new spark plugs. My '82 911 Targa now purrs like a kitten. Problem is, this kitten still burns oil like crazy when I give her some throttle. I switched to 20W-50 and very little smoke comes out of the tailpipe now, but something is dropping oil onto the exhaust manifold on the right rear wheel well. I'm thinking maybe busted crankcase breather hose? Unfortunately I do not have the resources at my disposal to drop the engine myself at this point, but I'm thinking of taking it to a shop. Anything I should look at before I blow the cash? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Heathbar,

It sounds like a "classic" overfill. Or possibly your engine mounted oil cooler sprung a leak.

Double check your oil level when warm.

Good Luck, Shane

Sorry

What area is it coming from. If parked> There are a few points that leak, and seems like big bucks are not a part of a fix..

I don't believe it is an overfill...I checked the dipstick (and had a 2nd party verify) and the oil level is fine. Also, the oil is not coming out of the tailpipe like I would expect with an overfill, nor is it getting whipped up by the crankshaft (I'm familiar with the sound...now THAT was an overfill ).

The smoke comes out near the front of the right rear wheelwell, leading me to believe it is an oil line of some sort. Are there any good ways to check this?

Oil Return tube leak dripping onto the heat exchanger?

Only way to tell for sure is you get under there and take a look.

Good luck

+1 on taking a look... crawl under there and have a look. Clean out the grime if you can't tell where it's coming from exactly. Then warm it up and watch. Sometimes these leaks can be decieving on these cars.. not always coming from where you first think. Mine dumped oil on the right side heat exchanger as well. Looked like my oil cooler leaking, so I removed it and checked it out. Not the cooler. Bought new rubber cooler seals and re-installed it. Mine leak was caused by loose/walking rockers, allowing oil around the channels and down the side onto the heat exchanger.

Troy's trek was helpful for me...these leaks can be very elusive in their pathing....do check the engine top (thermostat, idiot light sender, breather gasket),..then study the oil seals (3) on the oil cooler.....go from there....VC's good?

Clean it up real good.....then study the signature.

Best,

Doyle

Full agreement with Troy's assesment. PITA finding a finite source after the tornado does it's job, but the therm and idot light switch are the 2 most common, I have had them on my list for a month, maybe over the winter, my luck if I do them now they will be back in the spring. Mines on the opposite side same symptoms. Good luck.
