What tires do you Porsche guys roll on?

I’m a creature of habit and as such I’ve been using Bridgestone Pole Position tires on my 993 forever.

Recently a racing friend of mine told me he switched to Pirelli Zero and his track times improved. He claims the weight between the tires was the reason.

What is your opinion? I know both tires are good but tread wear is important as this is my daily driver. I average around 11,000 to 12,000 miles on the rears.

Thanks in advance, I know someone will lead me in the right direction.
James

The first part may be true, but the second part I call BS on. Anyone who thinks weight of tires is improving their laptimes, yet is still driving on street tires, is likely full of it.

P Zeros are pretty damn good tires - I've done a couple lapping days in a 996 turbo in them and was impressed with their stickiness, but for any kind of serious track driving, you need R-compounds, like the MPSCs someone mentioned above (what's normally on the 996).

The new Dunlop Star Spec tires. Seem to be a great street / almost R track tire.

Michelin Sport Cups seem to be the lighter of the DOT R tires.

Yup. I did a lot of research and decided to go with the new Z1 Star Spec. Fantastic tires so far (about 1500 miles on them).

Toyo RA1 on track and Toyo TR1 on the street. Much cheaper than the Michelins & Bridgestones. I see a lot of guys show up on their first DE on the expensive tires. That changes quickly once they keep coming.

The best way to improve lap time is seat time. Seat time is bought with $ you save on tires.

Nokian WR's !
I will never buy another brand of tire again.
Excellent wear / wet weather capabilities.
I'm sure there may be a better summer / high performance tire out there ...

btw, Pirelli pZero's - worst tire ever! Horrible wear and even worse in wet weather.

I've got P0 Neros on my 993 for street use, they are fine but not particularly light, for track days MPSC stick like glue and are extremely light.

As far as strictly street use weight isn't going to play a huge rule, as most street tires of a given size will weigh within a few #s of each other. Tire rack goes to a lot of trouble to do their tires tests, it's worth looking at the data that they provide.

JMO but it's hard to buy bad tires these days, some are certainly advantaged in one or a few areas but the differences are small and often subtle as long as you are comparing tires with in a catagory(ie extreme performance compared to other extreme performance). The difference between categories is larger but todays silica compound all seasons are still comparable to yester years top performance tires

I love the Toyo RA-1. Best value, long-lasting, sticky and very forgiving at the limit.

The Hankook RS-2 Z212 are great tires if you use them primarily on the street with a bit of track use and you don't have a set of dedicated track tires.

I drove to an event in the rain/very wet roads sunday morning with no hydroplaning issues at all, did well at the event and then drove back home. I also ran the hankooks on my stock-ish 944 last year on the track and I had probably around 5-6 hours of track time on them and the tread was still decent and they hadn't seemed to heat cycle out.
