The problem with this motor is that the guy is either keeping or has already sold most of the really rare, high dollar parts ( IE, the flat fan, throttle stacks, horseshoe assy). The only thing uber rare that now comes with the motor is the injection pump. Other than that I doubt that there are enough parts there to warrant that asking price.... it is really just a 3.0L possibly with lower compression, with a set of older KKK turbos mounted to it....

And it needs to be rebuilt!!!!!!
I would not pay even a fraction of that asking price.....

Now if it had all of the parts that I mentioned above.......then that would be a different story...

Jim Torres - 1984-1988 - 6th at Portland GT - 11th Sebring 12 hour.

Bidding at 56K - so I guess some people think it's worth it even without the expensive stuff.

Torres has been around for years.

He's got a bunch of 935 stuff for sale ... as well as a 917-30 that he campaigns at special events.

Nice guy.

These motors do have internal as well as external parts that are significantly different than the conventional 3.0L. Without going into very specific details, a real 935 case has stronger web reinforcements, the oil pump is different, the pistons are unique to that motor and because the pistons live in the cylinders, they too are a bit special. The heads have special oiling passage ways in addition the unique sparkplug size, plus a few additional details. The cam box and cams are also designed to work with all the items listed above therefore they are also a bit unique.
Most of the gaskets and seals, valves, timing chains, tensioners, bearings plus a few bits and pieces are common to the street 3.0L motor and are available "off the shelf". There is no way a street 3.0L motor with a couple of KKK turbos bolted on will make 650- 700 HP and live for more than 30sec.
Try finding a water pump, Titatinum fastners, exhaust gaskets or spark plugs for one of these motors at your local NAPA store or for that matter the local Porsche dealer.
As the prices of the cars go vertical, all parts associated with them will travel in tandum.
I would suggest to Turborat930; locate a copy of Bruce Andersons Performance Handbook for some light reading.

Hmm, where do I even start with this post???

First off, I never said that the motor was not a thing of beauty. All, I said was for what equates to a worn out 3.0L twin turbo, the guy is asking way too much money. I, and I sure countless others would never dream to waste that much money on that. However, that being said... There are a tons of fools with tons of money! If he had all the factory rare parts on the motor, then maybe the money would be a fair asking price.

Have you ever heard of Neil harvey at Performance Developments?? This sort of stuff is all he works on...935 and 962 stuff. He is the God when it comes to these motors. I am sure he probably has most of the parts to rebulid this motor on his shelf, and if he doesn't, he would either make them, or know where to get them.

As for your post about parts... I have to repost your quote, as I couldn't stop laughing...
"Try finding a water pump, Titatinum fastners, exhaust gaskets or spark plugs for one of these motors at your local NAPA store or for that matter the local Porsche dealer."
A water pump????????? Are we working on a 924 or a 935??? I sincerly doubt that NAPA or any other local auto parts store has ANYTHING for a 911 derived car, let alone a factory race engine. How about this, go to NAPA and ask them for a set of rods for a stock 3.0L 911 motor. What do you think the answer will be? And forget Autozone, Advanced or any other parts stores such as those.... They have a hard enough time finding a part for my LT-1 Jeep!!!!
When we get into cars such as the 911, we have to call places such as pelican Parts, EBS, TRG, Etc.... Even for stock parts.

So, I would gladly loan you my copy of Bruce Anderson's book if you need to read up for a few chapters!!
As far as the price on the ebay auction, The reserve has not been met yet. Ever consider that a few of the guys friends might be bidding on the part to get others interested in it, but not go over the reserve? it happenes all the time.

One other question.... What in the hell does this statement mean " the pistons are unique to that motor and because the pistons live in the cylinders"
Where else are the pistons going to live? I hope not in the case... I hope not in the cam towers... darn pistons... I hate it when they don't go home when I want them too!! Dude, seriously....

You may now bow down and apologize!!!

Let me make one point clear, regarding the "water pump", 935 motors do exist with a water pump that is used to cool the intercooler, they are water/ air motors instead of the traditional air/air motors. As these motors evolved into the 962 format again that motor existed in various configutations air/air, water/air as well as water/water.
Sorry you don't like my writing style and implied subtle humor.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and their desire to pay. I own the motors, I own the parts and I drive the cars. I don't need to justify my comments nor do I need to debate the issue, nor do I bow down and apoligize, DUDE .............

I read the "NAPA" comment as a reference to NOT being able to find these parts anywhere.

And yes, 935's had water pumps.

LMFAO!!!!! Look, that was good!!

WP935, I know that some 935's had a water pump that was used in conjunction with the A/W I/C, However, this motor... the one that is for sale on Ebay...and the one I was talking about did not have those parts with the engine. I also know that the later 962's were waterpumpers.... once again, this engine is not one of them.

My post was also sarcastic.... sorry if you did not get it....

I still stand my my first post...IMHO, the motor is not worth that amount of money..... Like you said, we all have our opinions....for the price its going for... I would expect "zero" time motor ready to run with ALL of the accessories... not a worn out long block with no accessories....
