Question Another spark issue...

Hi everyone,
Call me a sucker for punishment. I don't even have my '75 finished yet ( still working on the interior ) and I just bought a '76 911S. Couldn't leave it sitting there for the money.

Problem is there is no spark when the motor is in the cranking mode. This is what happens. Put the key in the on position and get one little spark. Turn the key to the start position and get no spark and as soon as you let the key go back I get one little spark. I am testing the spark plug wire right from the coil ( disconnected from the distributor ).

So I thought maybe a bad coil or maybe even the permatune. Since I get plenty of spark on the '75, I pulled the CDI box and the coil and put them on the '76. The exact same thing happens. Just wondering where to look next for problem. Thanks in advance.

Are the points any good? Are they adjusted?

Regards,

Hi Jerry.
The points aren't in the picture. I pulled the coil wire to the distrbutor. I'm checking the spark before it even gets to the dizzy. Thanks

the points are actually a trigger that tells the CD to discharge or fire. the points are the first place in the process of producing a spark with the sparkplug being the last place in the process.
check the points, 12v at on the connector to the CD and the wire from the points to the CD.
make sure the engine ground strap is good. check for continuity from the engine to the CD.
also check the wire from the CD to the coil and make sure the other side of the coil has a good ground.

T77911S and Jerry,
Thanks for the info. I didn't realize the points were still involved in the process. I thought that I was taking them out of the picture. I will give it a shot. I'll have to wait a few days though because of heavy rain in the area over the next few days. Thanks again

Thanks alot guys,

You were absolutely right on the money. Cleaned and readjusted the points and she fired up on the second try. Not to bad since she hadn't been started in a few years.

I have to say a big thank you again to you and the many others that are willing to share with everyone on this board. It really is such a value to have the knowledge and help that evertone puts forward. Thanks Wayne and thank you Pelicans.
