I’ll add to the welcome. ![]() You will find a lot of help here. I’ll add to Harry’s correct numbers. There are two ‘normal’ engines for the 1967 model year; 901/05 and 901/06. The subtle differences are in the cams and exhaust heat exchangers. More on that. The 901/05 engine numbers are 909001 to 911000 built in late ‘66. The 901/06 numbers are 911001 to 911190 built in late ’66 and 911191 to 912050 built in early to mid-’67. There was no distinction to which went into coupes and Targas. There is some controversy about the number of these engines compared to the number of chassis. * The VIN numbers for ’67 911 (normal) Targas are indeed 500001 to 500718 beginning December '66 for '67 delivery. Porsche lists VINs for the '67 911S as 500001S to 500718S. Somehow I question that 1436 total '67 Targas were built. It is uncharacteristically convinent that both series end with 718. The very desirable 901/05 has the then-new Weber carburetors but still has the “Solex” cams from the earlier Solex carburetor 901/01. In addition the heat exchangers were the same as the “S” version retrofitted to the very early 901/01 and used on the '67 901/02 911S. Porsche discovered that the 901/05 was too close in power output to the ’67 901/02 911S for the marketing people. They ‘dumbed down’ the 901/06 by changing the cams and installing ‘restrictor rings’ in the outlets of the heat exchangers. This reduced the power output of the 901/06 to closer to the 130 DIN hp specified for both the 901/05 and 901/06. By ’68 the exhaust restriction was gone on the RoW 901/06 and the USA 901/14 ‘normal’ 911s. The 901/06 cam was continued through the 911E series MFI. In addition to what Grady says, the 911S engine was type 901/02 serial #'s: 960001 to 962178
The 911 and 911S were built co-mingled. So the distinguishing feature is the S stamped after the VIV #; so you might have 500001 or 500001S but not both. Let me know what you find. Dave
