Yes, twin plugging by its self alows ignition is at a latter time in the cycle reducing pressure from initial ignition before reaching top dead center.

Plus, you can run higher compression and get even do better.

Adding my 2 cents, at an average 80 mph on long road trips, I get about 27.5.

Front spoiler, no rear.

And yes, carving up the back roads does reduce the mileage a bit :)

Like Rick-I, I keep track of every gallon, every mile.

My bone stock '82 coupe, in five years: 29,885 miles, 1410 gallons, 21.188 m.p.g.

Once got 26 mpg on the long, down hill, tail wind run from Lake Tahoe down 395 to home, but very unusual circumstances, hardly normal.

rnln 10-01-2008 09:50 PM

wow, you guys make me jeolous. I usually got between 21 to 23 mpg, 95% freeway. 25+ is nice.

gestalt1 10-02-2008 04:15 AM

has anyone been able to compare the 964 cars to carrera/sc mpg?

jurhip 10-02-2008 12:18 PM

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know why the first 1/2 of the fuel gauge contains more "detail." I think more resolution when I am near empty would be more helpful than letting me know I am 5/8's full. It really bugs me and I think it is the worst designed item in my entire '87.

BTW, I would like to track mileage but I scrape the nose on my driveway if the tank is full. But, by rough calculation, I am getting around 23 mpg mixed driving.

I thought it would be an indicator that something was wrong with the car if it started going south. Turns out the legislature and EPA (ozone level requirements) have much more effect on my MPG than how I drive or the parts I put in the car.

I have also noticed that the tank to tank MPG calculations vary +/- 5 MPG from what I think they should be due to when the shutoff on the vapor recovery pump works.

For richde in germany that is a lot of work to go from liters and kilometers to miles and gallons. I like the BMW commercial where they show a BMW going by a gas station in a small town in southern Germany and the price is $9 per gallon. Shouldn't it read like $1.45? And my 2003 WRX sedan 5MT has gone 108235 miles and used 4661.420 gallons of gas for an MPG of 23.219 MPG probably similar to your 2005.

I used to do the spreadsheet thing but now I calculate the MPG of each of my cars at fillup and have a general idea of what I've done so I can normally figure out if it was me or the car that needs help.

My WRX averaged about 20mpg around town, 25 on the highway for the 1.5 years I owned it. So very close to yours. The car I replaced it with does 15 in town and 26 on the highway. Of course if I drove a lot of miles I'd probably worry about gas mileage a more. I average about 9000 miles a year between two cars.

My freshly out of the shop '72 MFI 911 T gets 11-12 MPG and seems to run very rich (backfires and loads up). Any thoughts on how to lean it out a bit?

On the way back I stopped by Carson City and returned on highway 50, using 6.7 gallons in 235 miles for 35 mpgs. Total for the round trip was 33 mpgs at 70+ mph.

74 911 86 3.2 w/ GM Multec injectors, 0.060" plug gaps, 225/60/16 tires, 87 octane, .76 5th gear ratio on 3.875 R&P.

Since then I've eliminated the Multec injectors in favor of the stock ones and now get 33 mpgs for the round trip.

Does anyone have a data on their consumption in heavy city traffic?

I've been doing more of it lately and getting pretty poor mpg.

If someone would please tell Obama this, maybe in addition to inflating our tires properly, if we went back to the Jimmy Carter 55 mph speed limit we could cutback enough on foreign oil consumption we could sell the excess to China and fund US Government run health care and early retirement for all.

Heck, if we lowered the speed limit to 35 mph we could save enough oil to all be able to work 25 hrs per week and retire at 50 like they do in France.

I am smart enough to see the sarcasm in your post. :p We could all just drive a maximum of 35 MPH and save a lot of gas.

I always wanted to MAKE every person that thinks 55 MPH is a really good idea start a road trip from Enid Oklahoma and drive thru the panhandle of Oklahoma, continue to rural Colorado and drive to northern Nevada on to California. I have made that trip. It is very long and there is a lot of miles of nothing but rocks.

To save gasoline the trip should be made with no air conditioning in July. There should be a electronic limiter that shuts the car off if the driver hits 60 MPH. It would take one hour for the car to reset and be able to start.

It's a nice bonus that 911's get decent gas mileage, but is that what we buy them for??? I have fun with mine.....everything else is secondary.

My 2.7S with SSi's and sport 2in-1 out gets 24-25 at 80 on the freeway. My hi-po 2.7 RS like engine in the same car gets 17, maybe, on the freeway at 80....but the sound of the engine, at high revs (webers w/e-cams, 9.5:1 JE's, SSi's) is worth getting the 13-15 i usually get....but who's counting. i'm smiling. Gas mileage is important to me and I conserve usually, but......and it's a big butt.

True. However seeing as I use mine for long road trips it does make a difference and more importantly I like to know what others are getting so I know if my car is performing like it should or if there is something wrong with it.

DaddyGlenn 10-03-2008 05:36 AM

Man! I've got some serious work to do. I'm averaging 15 mpg in mixed driving and if I am careful, I can get 18.

janz 10-03-2008 08:05 AM

Exactly what I was thinking, after reading all the replies here I am happy with the 25-27 on trips on the hiway. Its a great excuse not to take the Suburban and instead of having hamburgers when I get there, there's enough money left for lobster. Not to mention it is a lot more fun to drive the Porsche there. Whats wrong with having the best of both worlds. Would love to see 30 mpg without having to sacrifice anything (like AC, power windows and door locks, power mirrors, power sunroof, comfortable seats etc.) and still know I'm driving a skateboard with a rocket attached to it.

2000 540i a - just squeezed 26-27 on a trip up to Oakland and back... prolly ave 68 on the freeway plus some stop and go. This seems pretty good.. tires 36f and 40r.
