Ok I tuned up the 3.2 in my 86 and I'm getting 25-27 mpg with it driving mostly hiway at 75-80 mph. Is this on the "good" side for this vehicle? Is there anything else I can do, besides losing wieght or options. I see those magnet gizmos that go around the gas line and the air flow thingies that go into the air filter housing, put one of those in my GMC Suburban and it gave me a tad over 1 mpg more on the hiway but hesitate to install one in my Porsche. Did all the bearings, new axles with the CV joints, car rolls real easy so I guess I'm looking for out of the ordinary part to increase mpg if possible.

Thats right about where it should be: you can always inflate your tires but then every 3 or 4 hundred miles you are going to have to stop and drain some fuel out of your tank:

I'd say that is on the good side and if you wanted more mpg you could always try out hypermiling. Not that I agree with it but it is there.

Don't waste your money on the magnet thingies. They do not work! They only make the company richer. If you wanted to try, you really don't need much more than two magnets - get them from Radio Shack, old motors you find in kids toys... There is actually a class action suit against one of the makers, for false advertising.

25-27 on a 3.2 and you want more? That's about as good as it gets. Try hypermiling. You should be able to do that in Holyoke, MA.

That is very nice mileage. The regular stuff like tire inflation, filters, cap/rotor, plugs, valve adjust....ect will all help. Weight loss for the highway shouldn't make much difference.

My 3.2 gets about 25 at the most on the highway.

I get 30+ out of mine, but with headers, exhaust & a SW Chip. I bet with a SW Chip, you might see 30...

I would say that is very good. I get about 23-24 mpg between fill ups. Mostly highway and country roads. That is 50% more than with my Grand Cherokee..

What everyone else said . I've only checked mine once (out of curiosity a few years back) on a highway trip over a full tank of gas and I got 27 mpg going 80-90 mph the whole way. I too have a SW chip, and could probably reach 30 if I lowered the speed a bit.

I recently picked up a couple of cars not designed in the stone age... BMW's and they have a digital readout for mpg. It is sort of fun to see how good you can do on a long trip. The mpg vs. mph curve starts to get pretty steep around 70mph. You pick up 2ish mpg's by driving 65 vs 75. On the 540 I can squeeze about 26mpg on the 328 can get about 32mpg. both of these at ~ 65-70. I tried on one trip with and without ac and improved 1 mpg. Probably a number of things not consistant that would invalidate the test but that's what I got.

I get about the same with my 2.7L, so it's good, all good.

Slow down to 60-65 and you'll see that increase to over 30mpg. The impact bumper cars are not the most aerodynamic.

If you want more, I'd recommend installing a smooth bottom like the 964 has. It really cleans up the airflow under the car and would probably be good for a couple MPG

I can get 30mpg Hwy easily in my 87 Carrera. Honestly, that is a huge plus in my book.

I do like the computer on my 08 VW GTi. Every work commute and freeway trip become an MPG game. The 2.0 Turbo FSi is an impressive beast. However, when you factor in the age (21 year old technology) and mileage (168,000) of the Carrera 3.2, the Porsche is actually more impressive!

I'm amazed you've kept a record of gas mileage for that long. I don't even worry about the gas mileage in my cars anymore. I figure the cost per fillup is worth it for the sanity I retain when I drive the cars like they are meant to be driven.

tune up, driving conservatively I get 28.4 with my 3.2

Think aerodynamic drag, rolling resistance, motor efficiency and total car weight. Maybe in that order.

Porsche was able to lower the drag of the C2 over the 3.2 Carrera.

Lowering your average freeway speed is likly the most effective method.

Dose anyone know if lowering a car or fitting a front spoiler reduces drag?

Reducing the back pressure in the exhaust can help as the motor dose not have to push against it. I wonder sense SSI's seem so efficient at 3k rpms, this migh help some.

Having Steve do a custom chip keeps cruse A/F a little leaner could help.

Check with him about pluging in your California brown jumper wire by the ECU. It makes the car run leaner under certain conditions.

I think a set of Prius rims and tires would make a noticeable difference.

Rest assured that I don't normally get 27 mpg, as I don't normally do highway trips and spend most of my time on the country "backroads". I don't worry about it either and drive her like I stole it. When she's on "E" I just put more gas in and keep on smilin' .
