996 Brakes on a 3.2 Carrera?
996 brakes seem to come up on ebay a lot. Has anyone ever fitted these onto a 3.2 Carrera or would there be too much work involved? Hurry up with your replys, only got a couple of hours to go ![]()

those are 996tt, they are a little big for use on a 911. But the parts to use them can be purchased from Steve Timmins
I would like to see something to use regular 996 brakes on a 911, but haven't to date.

Big challenge is that 17" wheels are required for this conversion.

As I said they are oversized for the application and they do have a lot of front bias, I have 993RS on my early C3 mit 3.6, they are slightly smaller but still overkill, A normal SC/Carrera is really happy w/ something in the 3.3 930 to GTP-L range which is where the normal 996 brakes fall

Dr. Timmins said in an email to me (as a result of a direct enquiry as to using 996 brakes) that he was sure he could most likely supply any combination required to use regular 996 (aka Boxster S) monoblocs front and rear. I hope he won't mind me quoting him here, I shouldn't think so: Quote:

I am not a fan of 3.2 Carrera 24x283 except as a minor upgrade to stock SC(20x283 & 20x290) in the front only w/ 3.2 Carrera front calipers. JMO, but using Boxster front calipers is not a good thing to do. I am a huge fan of 3.3 turbo rotors all around, they use 304x32 & 309x28 rotors and are great w/ any caliper set that can be adapted to them, that includes 964, 993, Z haus 917. In between the above 2 choices are Wevo(not available commercially but the prototypes were fantastic) which use 315x28 & 309x28 rotors, GTP-L which use 313x28 & 305x28 rotors, oem 964 which use 298x28 & 299x24mm rotors and 996/Boxster S rotors which use 318x28 & 299x24. Any Calipers that can use these rotor sets is going to be perfectly adequate for a normal run of the mill SC/Carrera. On the overkill side are the 993tt/RS rotors @ 322x32 & 322x28 and 996tt rotors @ 330x34 & 330x28mm. These do work I have the 993RS on both of my cars and the brakes are never an issue, they stop well and have decent bias(some better that others) An issue that I have w/ many DIY sort of brake upgrades is using a caliper designed for a bigger rotor on a smaller rotor. These sort of arrangements lead to overheated rotors and caliper piston hyper-extension. Steve is correct that there is a large jump in thermal capacity(which is what you really want) between each of the 3 general size groups small '69-89 911/Carrera medium Wevo, GTP-L, 964, Boxster S/996 large 930, 993RS/tt, 996tt and there are differences within a general grouping. The question is what do you need on your car early cars through 2.7RS and especially lt/wt versions are perfectly happy w/ stock 911S/A as the cars get heavier and faster the need for bigger brakes(actually rotors) goes up. Again JMO but anything bigger than 930 isn't needed for 99.999% of all 911s

And, if such a formula existed, what would be most desirable for the various usage (e.g. street, DE, AutoX)? Thanks.

bias is primarily a function of front piston area divided by rear piston area.
rotors are usually about the same, a bigger effectiuve radius increases bias at that end by a relatively small amount pad compound is also a factor, pad area is not desireable bias depends on chassis/suspension setup, lsd, venue, driver preeference A/X generally wants more rear, track generally less but chassis/supension, lsd, driver preference has a big influence too

I had them on my 72 RSR clone, and they worked fine. I got the rear kit from Timmins and had to grind about 1/8" -1/4" of metal of the bottom corner to make them fit, but otherwise no issues.

I've been trying to source adapters from Dr. Timmons for almost a year. He is having some real issues with securing the parts from his machine shop. It's driving me crazy walking by these beautiful brakes only to see them continue to sit.
If anyone has another source for adapters, I'd love to hear. I'm running 245/295 Pilots and will be trying this with Chuck's new rear suspension if I can ever source the adapters.....urgh.

Im also considering a 996-type brake update, but im still a bit confused about the fittings?
Option no.1 - 996/boxsterS front calibers and front rotors to my front = I only need a adapter for the caliber? - 996/boxsterS rear calibers and rear rotors to my rear = I only need a adapter for the caliber? Option no.2 - 996/boxsterS rear calibers and original C3,2 rotors to my FRONT = I only need a adapter for the caliber? Im a right about the rotor sizes? The Carrera 3,2 discs are: - Front: 290mm/24mm - Back 282mm/24mm The 996/boxsterS rotors: - Front: 318mm/28mm - Back 299mm/24mm

I don't think you can go with 996 or Boxter rotors.
If you cosider using 996 calipers than the best way is to combine them with front and rear 930 rotors, well this is how I did mine. ![]() ![]() |
