Fuel tank repair

Ok tomorrow I'm pulling my gas tank out of the 1972 Porsche 911. I'm the one that rubbed a hole in it on a car hauler from Oregon to Florida.

My plan is to clean it up really well and then repair thehole/crack with JB Weld. I used JB Weld to do the weber fuel bowl modification and have not had any problems so I' assuming it will work on a small hole/crack on the bottom of the tank.

Any one have any options regarding this kind of repair?

I do not really think that JB Weld will work for the fuel tank. I have seen some of the tank patching compounds the you cut off a portion, and then knead it to a uniform color, but these are really only short term fixes. I believe that the tank would really need to be brazed or welded to make a permanent repair.

I agree with 3.2CAB. Take it to a radiator shop or something similar ( or do it weld it yourself but fill the tank with something non-flammable before welding) JB weld will not keep the fuel tank sealed long.

Your fuel tank isn't something you want to half way fix. I took my tank to a good shop and it ended up costing about the same as replacing it with one of the new reproductions.

I just put one of the new repros in my 74 (got it at Parts Heaven). The fit in the car is pretty good, but not as perfect as the original. The only other issue was the sender hole/mount; the studs on the repro did not line up perfectly with the sender so I had to do some light filing on the sender. FWIW, it was lighter than the original tank as well.

JB weld worked fine on my gas tank. My loose battery rubbed against my tank which caused my hole. It's been over a year now, no more leaks.

Cheers,

Joe

J-B Weld, does not really recommend using it for gas tank applications, being it is only "resistant" not "impervious", just being resistant means that it will be damaged by the gasoline over a period of time, as opposed to being gasoline proof, and not being damaged by gasoline.

This quote is from their web-site:

"It's water-proof; petroleum-, chemical-, and acid-resistent; resists shock, vibration, and extreme temperature fluctuations, and withstands temperatures up to 500° F."

I would still advise against using J-B Weld on fuel tanks, and advise to weld or braze, to make the repairs. Good luck!! Tony.
