He never touches the shift pattern part That part stays in its current state. Only the outer surface of the black part and the clear cover are refinished. If you would like him to do one for you, he would be happy to.

Send your knob along with your return address, and $81.25 to

I don't see any pics. Is it just me?

Carrerax 10-24-2008 07:54 AM

The pictures were there 3 hours ago but not now. I will say that they looked nice.

I see them now.

I'm sure this is a great method and well worth the asking price.

An option to try for those who like DIY, is to rub the hell out of the top with Plexiglases scratch remover and then use Plexiglases polisher (available at marine stores and car shops for convertible top windows). I clean compass domes (on boats), and with a lot of elbow grease you can get out the crazing and most superficial cracks.

yes - chuck the knob in a drill or lathe & go after it with an
orbital polisher as it spins

ISpeed2day 10-24-2008 01:41 PM

Carrerax, yeah you save the $6.25 postage...

bluesky 10-27-2008 06:14 AM

well, I decided to give this restoration a shot on a really nice early 915 shift knob of mine.

The knob is perfect except for some small cracks on the surface AND in the inside of the clear dome cover. ISpeed2day explained that Erik's restoration process will fix these cracks including those internal cracks rather than just 'wearing' them away by buffing.

I'll let you know the results when the knob is finished and returned to me.

I'm looking forward to this since these knobs are NLA.

Here is your shift knob completed.

Erik thanks you and welcomes all business. If a knob is too bad to restore it will be returned undisturbed along with your money....

Thanks again!

Knob looks good but I hope you mean "undisturbed".

Eric_Shea 11-10-2008 05:28 PM

No... I think it means the poor knob will be rather disturbed when it finds out it wasn't able to be fixed.

Happened with my last knee operation. It's hard to watch it snow here in Utah... very disturbing! :D

Well, I received the above shift knob back last weekend and it turned out fantastic! :D

Thanks ISpeed for posting pics so that others can see the finished results.

This particular knob was a perfect candidate for restoration....the bakelite was not cracked and was smooth, the shift pattern was legible and not separating....it was extremely nice all except for the clear cover had cracks inside of it. Buffing the top surface would only remove the surface cracks but not the ones that were internal. These always caught the light and detracted from the otherwise perfect appearance of the piece. As I stated several posts above, these 915 shift knobs are NLA and since nice examples of the real deal selling for large $$ and reproductions selling for just under $200, I thought I'd take a chance with Erik's restoration....especially when I understood that his process would remove the internal cracks. When I opened the package and unwrapped the knob from the protective tissue paper, I was very please with the results....the internal cracks were indeed gone. I even looked at it under my jeweler's magnification lamp and was able to confim that they were indeed all gone. :)

Again, I am very pleased with the results...I wanted to share with you all my experience and recommend this service to anyone needing/considering getting their shift knobs restored.

I am so pleased in fact that I have another 915 knob that I have been saving that I am planning to send to him to restore.

Carrerax 11-18-2008 07:01 AM

I want to give mine to Erik but it has a chip out of it on the bottom (Where the shifter goes in) and was wondering if anyone has an old bad know that I can have/buy to use a portion of to fix mine.
