cabriolet top need help?

my 1988 cabriolet top isn't working. the relay clicks when i press the button, how do i test the motors or relay?

I have the same car, and found this extremely helpful. Ignore the fact that it's about a 993 -- with a couple of exceptions, all details are the same.

The only problem I've had is the cables coming loose from the motor -- or "shorten-ning" as described in the link above. Also, opening and closing on a level surface is critical.

You'll need to troubleshoot the electrical first... power to the motor? Correct voltage etc. Do you hear the motor spinning?
