Please Help Me Out With This

I posted previvously about inop brake lights. I have looked at the master cylinder and I see only one (are there two?) switch mounted on it. I assume this is the offending unit. Someone has said that it could be replaced without removing the booster and master cylinder. It seems to me that there is just no clearance to work...hell I'm not sure I caneven pull the wire connector within the limited space. What am I missing? Can a considerable amount of brake fluid be expected to leak once the switch is removed. I'm guessing I will need to bleed the brakes too.

Thanks for your sagely advise,

Swen

What Year is your baby?

I assume pre-84 or older?

I believe you have fresh air vent hoses in the way. You need to remove it out of the way then use a deep socket to remove the BLS (Brake Light Switch)

Take pic and post.

BTW, Welcome Aboard!

Car is an '82 SC. The switch is mounted on the right side of the master cylinder.

If you hold the brake pedal down BEFORE removing the switch and WHILE you replace it, you will lose little fluid and will not have to bleed again. I had my wife help me and it took less than a half an hour.

IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!: DO NOT let the brake pedal return to it's resting position while the switch is out.

remove the big side to side cardboard cover and the plastic heat hose above the master cylinder for clearance.

This job is a ***** and it was stuck in there pretty good on my (nice condition) 83. I used a deep drive 24mm socket to get it loose. IIRC I couldn't get the wrench on all the way...what a PITA.
