Brake shields, on or off?
Do I need brake shields?
Is the cooling improved without them? I run a few DEs a year and the brakes are a bit marginal on faster tracks. Any downsides to leave them of the car?

I haven't had the shields on my car in probably 10 or 12 years. No drawback to removing them as far as I can tell.

Most track cars remove them, most street cars keep them.

I believe the factory even recommends removing them in certain circumstances. If you have the factory manuals, check for the troubleshooting chart.

Ditching the shields is not a must. A few friends who are fast still have the shields on their cars ('79SC and '95 M3) and they don't have problems with brakes. It certainly doesn't hurt anything to get rid of them and it's not unsafe. Just don't go thinking it'll solve your soft brakes. You need to hone your braking skills to fix that.
Also is going to depend on what fluid and pads you are using. But I don't want to open that debate...............

Well, I didn't think that it would solve any big problems. But since I am in the process of changing the front wheel bearings and brake disks I thought I could leave them of.
The brakes don't go soft (well I don't think, they soft to begin with, but thats another story), but I have a few rotors.

I took mine off. Less weight and more brake cooling, even if it's just a tiny bit, has to help- right?
