how good are 95 non vram 3.6 motors

i sold my s2000 this past week and treated myself to all sorts of goodies for my car including turbo twists and all new gaskets for my doors and trunk and i put a deposit on a worked 95 3.6 with stock dual exhaust hollowed out cats a chip and a second oil cooler ,does anyone else have one of these in a 911 car and how good are they being it was the cheaper route for me to go instead of a turbo overall with similar horsepower ,and the fact i just turned 23 yesterday im a bit nervous about throwing the money down on what can be a dud

I don't have one but I think you will find several board members with a 3.6 transplant. To my knowledge the 95 3.6 does not have the CEL (check engine light) problem some of the other later 993 engines had. I would suggest you have the engine PPI'd, they aren't cheap to rebuilt as you probably know..

Sounds like you are going to be in for some fun!

Seems there are quite a few. You will be in good company.
Check out this link : How many 911 3.6 conversions out there ?

I've used used both vram and non vram, the non fits a little better leaving much more room around the top, power wise they are both more than adequate. You'll have a tough time using 993 oil cooler(s) on a 911.

I've got a 95 993 motor in my 74 - it's crazy fast :-)

How fast? you ask -- hard to pin it down since I haven't pushed the car much since I got it running, but it's definitely faster than probably anything that you are used to. From my experience it is the closest thing I've driven to a motorcycle - you just stab the gas to go whatever speed you want. If you've ever ridden you know that a good bike always feels faster than anything else, and the lightweight car is the same way.

yea the motor was out of a similar year p car so its ready , the po had a prob with the oil pressure and when my mechanics picked it up the put in the second cooler,he told me he had it sold so he could keep it for himself despite the number of rediculous turbos rs backdates 965 and g50 cars

what was the oil pressure problem? sorry, but your writing is hard to understand.

'95 is a good engine and don't have to disable drive block $1200 like the later OBDII engines. Collectively, you could interchange the harness, intake and ECU with later engines and convert to v-ram.

i sont remember what my mechanic told me about it he turned the car over and i was a bit awestruck ,by "po" meant the previous owner im sorry i use my iphone alot so i abbreviate and dont realize it ,they have the harness and everything for the car, im getting it at done turnkey for just about what a mint low mile vram motor would go for ,i have also heard that the vram cars are hard because of the electronic key and some other things, i wish i could afford the latter but im just a college kid with a bad habit of loving cars but i guess it could be worse

also in connecticut where i live cars older than 25 years dont have to contend with the gremlins of the epa and smog emmisions which is great ,i hate the dreaded check engine light and smog sensors ,so im not to worried about the ob1 or 2 computer setup

If you have a line on fair priced non vram 3.6 got for it.
As far as lap times a vram motor is not going to be much quicker if at all.
The small difference can be made up with driver skill.
Video of my non/vram 3.6 with a close ratio 915.

thanks guys, that's a 3.6 in a well sorted 911.
In the video on any corner I'm not downshifting I'm left foot braking with some gas on too.
Controlling wieght transfer, the traction circle.
My 2 cents, track a 911 with a smaller motor and you'll learn to master momentum.
That helps to make better 911 drivers.
When you get a 3.6 in your car you might want to stiffen your suspension, t-bars/shocks/adj SB to match it.
Point is a non vram is plenty of motor for me/most of us too.

Ted, you suck!! That's an AWESOME video!!! I really enjoyed it and hats off to you. I don't know what times are considered "very" fast for that track but that looked pretty smooth. Little tail wiggle just means you're pushin' it! I will show my non-Porsche friends that video to explain my goals. Nice job, my friend.

81turboporsche....
The 95 3.6 will be just fine for you. When I did my swap, I went with the 3.2 because it was easier and it would give me time to get my car more sorted and improve my track skills.

It's more fun making a "slow car" go fast than driving a fast car with less skill and leaving seconds on the track.

Oh, and try mixing in some punctuation. See charleskieffner for reference. Ha!
Sorry Chuck. Had to do it.

hey, ditto on the 21 but having already caught the disease that causes us to spend countless hours (and $) on an old piece of nazi machinery....

mines a 278rwhp 3.5L, an its way faster then i am, i can take the meaning of leaving seconds on track to heart...

I've had both...the VRAM with a Rennsport flash felt a little torquier than my current 95 engine, but I havn't put the GIAC in this one yet....regardless, it's the best bang for the buck and as Ted said, beef up that suspension to get the full value of the HP, and as Bill stated, there's a lot more room in there......
