The 2.4 to 3.2 swap has begun
I dropped the motor and trans today for what is to be the start of a 3.2 swap. I wouldn't attempt this without these forums and I'm sure I'll be bugging everyone with questions. I've read about the past swaps and hopefully everything will go OK.
First stage will be getting the fuel system set up and the electrical. Then I'll pull the transmission off the 2.4 and attach it to the 3.2, I'm not looking forward to notching the trans ![]() ![]() ![]() Another plus is I didn't break anything when I dropped the engine. No torch or BFH was needed.

beautiful car...turning into a beast, eh?
take the oil temp and oil pressure senders from the 2.4 and shove them into the 3.2. Most likely the senders on the 3.2 do not work with the gauges you have.

Originally I had planned to put the 3.2 into the gold 71. I bought the 71 roller a couple of years ago. I went to the guys house to pick up some door pockets and ended up with the roller. The 73 was running fine this summer, but was always cold natured and when it turned cold just would not start. So instead of trying to figure out the CIS I figured I might as well put the 3.2 into the 73. It has 21/26 torsions, bilstein shocks/struts, and all new bushings, ect. I bought the 3.2 last year.
The 73 already has the 915 and I believe the fuel tank will work. It also has the dual fuel lines running to the engine compartment. So the 2.4 will probaly go into the 71 with a 911 trans and carbs. But thats the next project. And yes I was sitting in that chair trying to decied if this was really what I wanted to do. I sure hope the 3.2 runs. It has good leakdown numbers but that's all I really know about it.

Here is a pic of the motor. It is a 84 euro. I'm going to use some early heat exchangers and backdate the heat.

Have fun. I went from a 2.7 on its' last legs to a 40k mile 85 3.2 and have had a blast ever since. In your lightweight short geared car, it's going to have some real fun potential.
It's not that hard. I ran mine over the first winter with no external cooler, but as soon as spring came, I had to get the Carrera fender cooler and fan.

I wish you luck. I'd make sure the cylinder head temp sensor was the newer type and that the flywheel sensors are adjusted before the engine goes in. Also I've read about the engine fuel lines seeping. I've read a few threads about leaks and fires. All are best checked now while the engine is out. It's good to have the engine sheetmetal from the 73 to backdate the heat. The 73.5 fuel tank also has the swirl chamber which is vital for the fuel injection. Older tanks do not work well during cornering with low fuel levels.

Put my order in here for a few parts to get this thing going. DME relay, fuel filter, coil, exhaust nuts and gaskets, 02 sensor, clutch cable, and a few other gaskets and seals. I don't currently have the altitude sensor. I didn't see it listed here and I'm not sure I even need it. I bought a 3.2 fuel pump here used and I'll be running some new fuel lines also.
Not a lot I can do until I get the parts in. I'm cleaning up some engine tin from a 69 and I'll drill the hole for the DME harness. Ill also get the fuel lines run and a bung welded on for the 02 sensor. Am I missing anything that I need to do while the engine is out?

I'm hoping to do this same project in the coming years. Are you upgrading the brakes at all?

I have brakes from a later car, 3 1/2" spacing, originals in the rear. I changed the struts to bilsteins when I went through the car earlier. I don't know if they are really any better than the stock 73 brakes.
This is a street car so I think I'm good with what I have.

You wrote that you were going to use early heat exchangers. The 3.2 has thicker flanges than early ones. You might want to change to shorter exhaust studs or the allen nuts won't tighten up. That or you might need spacers.

I like this!
Of course, since I have a silver 1973.5 with a 3.2, I'm a bit biased. You're in for a lot of fun with that beast. |

Greg,
I'm curious. What copper exhaust nuts would you replace the allen nuts with that are installed through the holes in the heat exchangers? |
