Newbie-Time for Intro

Sorry for the delay on introducing myself. Should've happened on the 1st post not the 26th. Anyway car nut for 52 years, but had to step away for awhile while the wife and I raised our family. About 2 years ago I started the quest for the right Porsche. After many conversations and recommendations from friends (thanks "Slo-n-Rusty") and dad I settled on a 87-89 Carrera. Although briefly sidetracked by a two owner, beautiful 944S with only 52,000 miles ($8,000) I stayed the course! Since May of 07 my garage has been filled with a 1988 Carrera Targa. I wasn't looking for a Targa but the care and records seemed to make the choice obvious. My thanks to Wayne for this site and to all of you for making it worthwhile. I spent alot of time on this site prior to purchase. Reading, laughing and thinking before the purchase. I think Peter's book may have pushed me over the edge. You guys like pic's so let's see if I can load a few.

Great looking car! Now you need to add a pic to the 'Ultimate Targa' thread! Are you a PCA member? See you at the '09 Parade?

Cheers,

Paul.

Very clean Carrera. Congratulations. How's it run? Since you haven't asked the question most new owners ask ("what should I do first?") I'm assuming you want to just drive and enjoy it as-is for a while.

Thank-you. This car is incredible. Even with 120,000 plus, week-end mornings, the mountains, and on-ramps are my therapy.

That car is BEAUTIFUL! I really like the white 911's (and white is not normally a color I like at all on cars, but for some reason white 911's are perfect in that color.)

I wouldn't worry about that.. I don't think I have posted pictures of my 911 yet either. I keep changing / fixing / replacing things I don't think I'll ever have it in a photographable state

Hi Jack, Thank-you. The results of 3 months of looking, a great friend, Dad, a through PPI, Peter's book, and intuition? I think it runs great! GPS says 6810' altitude at my mailbox, so other stock Carrera's at lower altitudes may do better, but I'm happy as I can be. Virtually everything that needed to be replaced (my God the record folder is an inch thick) has been done. Saying that, I have replaced the clutch, done the major service (German MotorCraft), replaced the sound pad, and recently resealed the top of the engine. (Leaks were causing alot of smoke at the stop lights). Oil consumption appears to be slight at best with no leaks. Longest trip has been about 300 miles and I got 27mpg. Heater works great and AC stands for...... what? I do need to look into a new headliner for the top so that will be another thread. With my limited knowledge I can't imagine improving this car, (Maybe a SW chip?) How ling is a while? HA

Regards
Karl

Thanks Bill

I went to a DE event here in Colorado in Pueblo. I did not participate but still had a great time. Maybe next year I can get an instructor to run the track with me. The thought of my inabilities causing harm to my car or another is, to say the least a little unsettling. Honestly, I would love to know my car's capabilities, I just need a pro to lead me around a little to show me the ropes..........then I can back off about 4 tenths and really have a ball!

Regards
Karl

Scott, Thank-you. From your '450knotOffice' moniker, we may have similar interests. While you may be at 450 knots, I think true airspeed on an Archer is closer to 120. HA. Business vs. pleasure. For some reason I can't decide if the air or the ground is where I belong! Maybe Porsche provides the best of both worlds??

Regards

Here's some news you'll enjoy - my Daily Driver just turned 215k, with no major engine work, and shows no signs of slowing down. These cars are incredible. Spending time here is what drove me to buy a second one, rebuild the engine myself, and go racing.

I will have the car for along time, but don't know if we'll make it to 215k. Rebuild the engine? Me? I think I'll start with brakes and service work. Valves/tune/oil. Things I understand. It sure is going to be fun to learn though.
