Hey Guys,
So I went over the signals from the sensors again today. While the car ran the signal appeared to be right on 2 volts for both the speed and ref sensor. I let the car warm up and when it wouldn't start inspected these signals again. The ref signal looked okay however the idle signal would more than double in voltage when the car wasn't working. I took a look at the sensor and it appears that when the cut I made in the bell housing to make room for these sensors was pushing up against the speed sensor. I didn't realize how hot the transmisison can get while the car is running. Anyway, I removed the whole bracket, carefully notched out the contact peice in the bell housing with the dremel, and had to cut the old sensor off then tap it out because the metal end was pretty much fused into the bracket. After some work I was able to remove it. I reinstalled the sensor that I had pulled out of the original reference sensor location and then regapped the bracket (what a pain that is... working in a space where you can only get one hand in but need 3 to do the job) So the sensors were put back in and bracket regapped. By the time I was done it was several hours later and the car was pretty cold again. Car fired right up as usual. I let it idle and worked the throttle for about 15 minutes until it started getting warm. Shut it down and for the first time in quite a while it started back up without hesitation. Ran it for another 10 minutes and repeated... Car starts no problem now. I did this a few more times just to be sure. I just want to send a big thanks out to the people in this thread who provided some valuable information and stuck with me through the trouble shooting process. (especially Ischmitz and Scarcellar) In the end I believe the issue was caused by the transmission housing being in contact with the sensor, and as it warmed up caused the sensor to function incorrectly. |
Dennis, I am glad you found your issue. This is what makes this board so invaluable....

Dennis,
Nice job! Glad you have it running. Enjoy the car. Most important thanks for the update. |
