Oil thermostats, what consitutes opening and closing correctly?

I have an '83 SC 3.0, my oil level has been erratic when reading, I think it has to do with the thermostat or themostats opening and closing at correct intervals. It seems they should open when the oil reaches a certain temp allowing the oil to flow thru my "tombone" to cool the oil. Do they open and close durring normal operation? Meaning once open are the always open, or durring operation do they open and close in relation to oil temp? Upon returning from a lengthy trip today I noticed my oil level gauge showing about 1/2 way, which by the way it seldom moves at all, I parked the car level, let it sit a minute or 2, checked the oil and it was well over 1/2 way on the dipstick, which it never seems to be, generally about a 1/4 is the norm. I'm happy with the readings just confused why the change, always read it after a long run and never add till it hit's the bottom mark on the dipstick.

Are you checking the oil with the engine running and on a level surface?

The oil gauge will fluctuate during driving due to changes in rpm. The engine pumps more and draws down the tank level at higher engine speeds.

The thermostat opens progressively. It is a bi-metallic valve that bends to fully open 10 or 20 degrees above the initial opening. The opening of the thermostat will not make the oil level drop if all other variables are equal. The cooler circuit is always full of oil, so there is no extra volume to fill.

I'll refrain.

Yes it is always fully warmed up and on level groung, running when level is checked. I am aware that the trombone set up is certainly not the best set up, and a front cooler is in the works for the spring, however it always runs at a very reasonable temp, around 198 degress, alittle higher on very hot day's "never" above 220.

I assumed she opened at a specific temp reading,...unsure as to the linearity of the opening movement...possibly a "range" of openings. I've not tested mine on the wife's stovetop to actually see it's movement,..many threads here from those who have tested this way..

Option?

Best,

Doyle
