dishwasher as a parts washer - my experiment

well, after I got busted inside the family built-in with a tape measure, ( just TRY explain that to your wife!), I went out and bought an old portable unit. actually it was free for pick-up, but a single mom with three kids looked like she could use a dinner out. anyway, $40 later I'm happily on my way with my new toy.

when I got it home I cut off the coupler. because I need to feed it with a garden hose to my laundry faucet (hot) and I'll let it drain on the rocks in my parking area. attached a hose end to the supply hose ($2.59) and I'm ready to go.

tried my cam towers first. used dishwasher powdered soap and a water soluable de-greaser. pic is before shot.

I was able to fit both towers in. FWIW my case halves (with studs ) won't fit. turned it on pots and pan cycle with 'sani' heat.

here's the result. not too bad for no work at all. I'll have to experiment with soap and degeaser mixes, and could catch the mix to recycle. also, a degreaser pre-treat and a bit of brush work would do wonders. bigger shops have cleaning machines that use water and some kind of powder for cleaning, mixed with water. I'm looking into it. Don.

UR a smart guy to not try that in the house. My 1st wife got real upset when I painted a m/c tank and put it in the oven to "bake" it......

Don,

Great idea! Be very careful with your soap selection as some will damage the surfaces of manesium and aluminium. Someone like this http://www.landa.com should have what you need.

my dentist friend from across the street came over for something and saw it. I told him I got a really good deal on it but I'd have to keep it outside for awhile. he's a pretty good sport.

UPDATE: I ran them thru again after hitting the tough parts with 'GUNK' and a brush. here they are now. I see all kinds of possibilities for this, all of which don't involve me sitting with my head hanging over a bucket of smelly, toxic solvent. D.

I appreciate the above kindness at least as much as your nice job.

My wife was out of town for a couple of days......

I used the dishwasher for two loads. Cam towers and P & C's were the other. I had cleaned a lot of the parts with kerosene then blasted with Al oxide, glass beads and walnut shells as appropriate. Rinsed them all real well and and ran them through the dishwasher for a terminal rinse and scrub with a non abrasive gel type detergent.

During the run it had an interesting smell and left a metallic residue that washed away after another load of non-eating stuff, like vases etc.

Don,
I've got our old one in the basement. works well as a parts washer. Try simple green in it.

thanks Al. I've got some SG, I'll try it next load. try adding a dollop of it to your carwash bucket with the soap. makes for a very nice, spot-free rinse. also a bit in a bucket of water does a nice job for wiping down the interior.

ps. carbs look great, sitting on the shelf. hoping to start assembling the engine next weekend. D.

notmytarga- I busted a gut when I saw your pics. my wife came to see what was so funny. she didn't see the humor. I hope you have those pics in the super-secret file on your computer, where your wife will never-ever see them.

Always thought that would be a good idea.

Would clean parts pretty well before. Not to cool dumping oil down the drain. Could run through some type of filter like a diatimatious (sp) earth or kitty litter then the drain.

I've tried it once with some small parts while my wife was at work. Taking photos would have been a dangerous move if they ever surfaced around the home. Worked great, makes me want to get one for the garage. My only suggestion is, if you're experimenting with solvents, etc then make sure the heating element is disconnected.

- what is the problem with his setup?

I take particular OFFENSE at your use of the term to attack people who are trying to leave a better place for their kids -- even if misguided

I think the dishwasher idea is brilliant, not sure whether to try my house one or go look for a used one...

As for offense, I actually think the term is appropriately used and a further discussion of it may well best find a place in Off Topic.....under a heading something like "Neo-Pagan's and their use of Nazi Techniques"

...lightening up is a good idea too..

Dennis

I just tried 3M Engine Degreaser for the 1st time and am thoroughly impressed. I got mine at the local Napa auto parts and it did a great job on the underside of my engine. I'd like to try that in the dishwasher with greasy parts...
