Failed NJ Inspection - Missing shift pattern on knob.
 

I failed nj inspection a little while ago, emissions, low tire tread, no front licence plate, and "Incorrect or missing shift pattern on shifter"

I took care of the emissions with a new cat, got new tires all around, the front plate i still need to figure out a way to mount temporarily, but does anyone know of a local store like pep boys or auto zone that would have a cheap $5 rubber knob with the correct pattern on it for a 911?

You may want to consider NJ Collector Car registration, then you wouldn't have to worry about any of the items on your list...

Cut out a round shape of avery paper , stick it on and draw the shift pattern with an ink marker:D....I know it sounds stupid, but it might get you by the inspection;)

But yes, this is real. It is hard to believe they would fail me for something so stupid.

Yea, i was thinking of getting a plain faced black rubber el-cheapo shifter, and writting the pattern with a whiteout pen.

You could probably have the shift pattern on a small plate in the center of your dash, made at any trophy, badge shop.
Then, once you pass inspection, throw it in the glove box for next time...

Too funny...I got busted for 'no shift pattern on shifter' about 10 years ago. I fought with those idiots about it but they failed me anyway. In the end I got the car re-inspected at a local STS. I stuck a green sticky dot on the shifter with the pattern drawn on. The STS guys thought it was a hoot and passed me.

I would have drawn the pattern on a sticker, and while I was at it put one on the steering wheel explaining left and right.
But it's generally not a good idea to piss off bureaucrats...

This is why for me, it makes sense to pay the local indy shop to handle the inspection. I had no idea that NJMVC inspection required the shift pattern to be displayed. I would fail as I have a WEVO shifter. Gee, I'm so happy that my NJ tax dollars are being put to good use annoying motorists with worthless crap like this.

Do you guys think that this would fit the shifter? $8 free shipping just to get me by. Just too bad it doesnt say "type R" or something silly like that, while i toss my real shift knob up and down in the air while they inspect the car...

it looks like a 1-5 R type! How much HP gain do you get from that?

Rika, i saw the officer stuck himself in the car ass first. His fat legs crushed the driver side raised seat edge as it cried out in pain and agony. He then proceeded to rotate himself and his fat donut injected thighs 90 degrees into a driving position as i heard the leather shriek once again under the force of the thunderous twisting of his oversized buttocks, where he then commented to me on the shift pattern. I guess if i was that loaf i would give a 25 year old guy driving a 911 a hard time too.

As it is i take my wallet out and place it down next to the emergency brake while driving so the buttons on my wallet dont permanently indent the leather, and i weigh 180. You could imagine how tramatic this expirience was for me. I also never twist around on the seat in fear of ruining the leather.

fyi all this happened because i drove myself right into a mobile inspection unit on the side of hook mountain road in pinebrook nj, and i had an expired inspection sticker.

If the pattern is required, can you make it a three speed? Classic "H" 1-2-3-Reverse? If you wait till the local doughnut shop has the fresh and hot sign in the window on, the fat guys will "be on break" and you might get a skinny to do the inspection.

Tattoo the pattern on the back of your (shifting) hand. That should shut them up.

i'd use dbl stick tape on the dash for a small sign, as per post above - cheaper than a knob

keep a digital cam in the car - photo fat boy as he scrunches your seat, then contact his supervisor re any damage
- also asl if there aren't any physical fitness stds. for officers
- and mention that his fat ass will cause higher health car premiums for you as a taxpayer

- if you don't get a good reply, then file a petition for rule-making to create / increase fitness standards under the NJ administrative procedures act...

obviously, officer fatboy is not gonna be your good buddy after you drag his ass thru a bunch of administrative BS - but you can more than make your point...

They aren't the ones that wrote the law requiring a visible shift pattern...

Does it have to be on the shifter? Many cars had the pattern on the dash by the shifter (VW Beetle).

Unless you're going to use that knob permanently (looks fine btw), I wouldn't waste the $8. Looks like they use set screws and various nylon inserts to accommodate different size shifters, all of which are probably incorrect for our shifters. With a die grinder or equivalent or some al. shims, the knob can be made to fit. Not sure about its proportion relative to the factory knob. Aren't Japanese hands smaller?

I assume you already had those hilarious shift knob pics in your computer already. Otherwise, I'd say you managed to blow some productive work time compiling them this morning. Or maybe you wasted it in the past and found a convenient way to rationalize that effort. Are they for sale? If so, PM sent. (just kidding) :)

I should think you can just scrawl it on a piece of ordinary masking tape. Can they possibly mandate the quality, type face or reproduction method? Here in New York, the inspector--local Dodge dealer tech--just rolls his eyes and hands me the sticker, saying, "I'll just say the car didn't have carburetors, no cats, headers and all that stuff when it left MY shop..."

And for your front plate, a couple of strips of Velcro should hold it on.

Kill the messenger. That's my motto. If the inspectors get enough grief from the public, perhaps they'll start "waiving" or looking the other way when it comes to shift knobs. An absurd law and a waste of time.

Nah...just type in "cool/weird/wild" shift knob in Google images and you'll see hundreds.

915 Shift Instructions:

1st - Should be up and to the left

2nd - Down and to the right, but pause when you are doing this while driving

3rd - The loose spot straight ahead that isn't fifth

4th - Down and rightish, but not reverse, let the clutch out slowly if you are downshift ing ot make sure it's not in second, especially if you paused on the downshift (see 2nd gear)

5th - Way up and to the right, pretty far away from the driver, passenger help is appreciated if you have a sore back.

Reverse - over to the right and down, but not straight over to the right, go down a bit first then over, then pull back. If it won't go into gear you are too close to fifth, or you need to double clutch. Or both.

That's only for automatic. This is manual.

All automatics have that pattern by law, not just Porsche.

How come you guys didn't make all this commotion when the cars were new?
It's just a law. The guy happened to be doing his job.
Hopefully he was as thorough on the other safety items.

I was refused registration during a pre reg. inspection in CT and had to be reinspected in a older american musclecar (with auto) because the aftermarket floor mounted shifter didn't say PRND21. I went and bought sticky paper with #'s and letters. I then returned with nicely done pattern on the drivers side of the shifter. They said that looks GREAT! Now sir can you please turn on the windshield washer? Thats another story.

That's only for 68 and later Beetles. 67 and earlier ones have no shift pattern anywhere.

I have a black plastic (no clear top) 915 shift knob . Very nice.. $30 shipped.

$100 the inspector would not know the proper shift pattern. I go to a place where they let me drive it for my inspection. Go to a print shop and get a sticker made and only tape it on, should be reusable for 10 years.

Does not surprise me from those idiots at NJ Inspection stations. I once went with my wifes mini van and they wanted to fail me for "obstructed windshield view" for a 3 inch chunk of snow/ice in the lower left cowl area.....below the area of where the inspection sticker would be located, only obviousely on the inside. I said to the inspector, "you're kidding me, right?" He looked at me with a straight face and said "no" the vehicle failed. I reminded him that it was January, north east, 20 degrees outside, and the best part........NOTHING ELSE FAILED!! CAR WAS FINE!! At this point I refused to re-enter the car without speaking to his supervisor. The keys are in my pocket, engine off, and I'm refusing to move the car....which is now holding up the line of cars behind me. A small crowd of other motorists has gathered and are on my side! Love it. Supervisor shows up to check out the commotion and looks at his inspector after I explain the situation and says the same thing I did....."you're kidding me, right?" The supervisor removes the errant piece of ice, throws it on the floor where it immediately starts to melt from the strong forced hot air, apologizes to me and orders the inspector to give me a passing sticker which he reluctantly does to the roar of cheers from the onlookers! He is then ordered to report to his office. Felt like I hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth, bases loaded, score tied. Can't make this stuff up....only in NJ.

I would have pushed/held his face in the ice/snow until it melted then said "There you go"...

I'd do the paper nicely taped to the dash, if they give you any **** because it's not on the shifter tell them you can't see it there when you are shifting. The entire thing is just stupid. Some asshat demonstrating their need to demonstrate power over others.
