Question Steel 930 Flares....need opinions

Since I’ve taken a new direction with my track car project and did a little de-tuning to make it more streetable I am canning the idea of full ’74 RSR body work.

Since the engine will still be putting out around 340-350 hp to the wheels I will need a lot more meat in the back than my SC can provide. As far as wheels go I think 9’s and 11’s should do fine.

I’m thinking steel 930 flares (since it will be mostly street) with IROC bumpers.

I am looking for opinions on who makes the best fitting steel flares, Restoration Design or Dansk? I really can’t see spending more than double for OEM Porsche.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mike. For a point of reference, I can run 265mm tires in the rear of my Carrera with 10" rims. I'm working on something now that will allow me to run 8 to 9 inch rims up front and 10" in rear. I think that'll be plenty of meat for my 300 HP N.A. targeted car But when the boost is applied, I might melt the 265's fairly easily....

As for flares, the best fit might be used ones cut from a 930. There is a someone parting out a 930 on the classifieds now who might be cutting it up.

With a big shoe horn the largest wheel package I have heard of with SC flairs was:

Front: 17" x 9.5" 23mm offset. 245x40 17 tires.
Rear: 17" x 10.5" 15mm offset. 275x40 17 tires.

With a LSD that is a lot of tire and more than most Turbos run.

I am sure you will check out the price of tires larger than this before you pull the triger. 255/17's seem to be a deal in R type shoes.

Thanks Souk,

I'll look around for a set of cut off 930 flares.

But the question still remains if I cannot find a set of originals.......which fit better?

Surely someone must have an opinion.

Regards

You will be getting a very subjective opinion on this. It isn't always the part that is the problem. Most parts are close enough to do a nice job. However, whomever is doing the fit up of the parts can make a marginal part perfect or ruin a perfect part. Then there's each individual car.....

I've got no opinion on the steel manufacturers.

But with a widebody the big challenge is the fronts, not the back. The front is where the space is tight, and for the sake of handling, you want a decent offset front to rear. I could run 13x17 wheels in the back of mine, but with only 9.5x17 in the front, I put 1-inch spacers and 11x17 wheels in the back for 275/315 tires.

That's a good question. Of course the best fitting are OEM Porsche. I run Dansk rear flares on my widebody and they are fine. Not perfect but they don't need to be.

I sorta think RD resells Dansk flares but I don't know that for sure. I would like to find out though...

Hi Tim,

I haven't asked Bill yet. I'll speak to him Monday, I know he's at the track the last few days.

I am agonizing whether or not to 930 or RSR the SC.

I know that I'll need a lot more rubber with the power on tap.

Any thoughts?

There's a thread here called "Death of a Wide Body" or something like that. A Pelican is converting a wide(ned) body back to narrow. Search around, perhaps he still has the flares.

I agree with the above that the installer is more important than the brand of flare. Here and in Excellence several people have had issues with incorrectly installed flares. Than can be a real PITA to fix.

It is a lot cheaper to get 275's under a rear SC than go to a turbo body flair conversion unless you use the 935 flair type extensions. Plus you keep your air resistance down. RUF did this with his Yellow Bird for a reason.

Another idea is you can add and inch to your SC flair for 305's.
