85 MPH Speedometer Question
Hello;
I'm a Newbie! I just purchased a 1980 911 SC. I will be flying to the lower48 next week to drive it & then sadly, put it in storage until spring vacation. I see a number of 150 MPH speedometers for sale, to replace the 85 MPH original. Does the 150 MPH speedometer require a different sending unit?? Thank you; Richard |

Not sure on the answer, congratulations and great success with your 911, I thought the '82 was the year for the old 85 mph, maybe '80 thru '82 ? I get confused and don't know the rhyme or reason as to the 150 or 160 mph speedo's either, they seem to bounce back and forth between models for years, have no idea if there is a correct one for a specific year or does the 'ole what ever was in stock at the time went in, apply here. A quick note, going way against the grain here, I would like the 85 mph speedo, the 150 I have has little real usable area on it, the 0-60 area is tiny, seems that having 0-85 over the broad guage space would be far more usefull, as that is where I spend the majority of time, I don't need showing the 150 or 160 to show "how fast it could be" I know how fast it actually is.

Very good point on the usable meter range. I can live with 85 MPH. I just don't want to damage the speedo when I exceed the 85 Maximum. I will post some pics upon my return. Lastly, I am sure I will be spending a great deal of time (and Money) on this site! I will retire to the lower48 (Idaho) in 3 years. The car is in storage in Idaho & I will restore it between now & then. Can't wait!!!!!!!!! Thanks again; Richard |

Don't worry about the over 85 damage, it will just bottom out and no damge to the speedo.

I've kept my 85 speedo... ORIGINAL.
No damage at all no matter how fast you go. You can come pretty close to estimating your speed from the tach. |
