gas tank replacement

Hi,

Can the early gas tank (65-73) be a direct replacement for the tank from 75' 911 ?
Are there differences in mounting?

Marcin

I think they are the same except for the spare tire, You should be able to use a full size spare with the early tank but also holds less fuel.

I believe the later tanks have different internals (baffels) that prevent fuel starvation under hard cornering. They also require the space saver spare tire. Lastly they are clearly not stock which could lower the value of the car if you ever want to sell the car.

You will need a 73.5 or newer for the CIS models. My 73.5T tank has space for the standard wheel/tire. When they switched to the tire saver tank I am not sure, but the internals are the same. If you find one used and decide to refurbish do not forget to remove the internal fuel filter (big hex nut on the bottom)first and replace the screen with a new one.

Mounting is the same, but save yourself a bundle on the narrow foam gasket that fits between the gas tank and the body. You can get the same stuff (one side adhesive) they use for window or door weatherstripping.

Last time I checked on a new tank for my 1973.5T model it was over $880.00 at the dealer! Ouch.

I'm guessing from your signature that the question was asked to keep your backdated 75 authentic. If so, RWebb's answer is the correct one.
As posted by others, earlier tanks will mount but the internal swirl pot is missing--appeared only on CIS tanks (73.5 and later)--and that is needed for CIS. Later larger capacity tanks will fit, are easier to find, and I believe they were an option in some early models (think RS) so they could be technically correct. I hope someone can confirm that because I just remember reading about it from a source I have forgotten.

Thanks for avice. The tank will go to my backdated 75'. I lost my current tank during the Saturday rally. I have now 3.2 engine installed. I think having chance to place spare tire into the tank save more space in the trunk.
