Uh oh...It`s snowing and I got the 911 to work...

This morning was rainy, but since I decided I was turning my 911SC into a daily driver, I did not take the SUV.
Now, the temperature brutally dropped, and it is snowing! (atypical for NJ in this season, as far as I remember).
Sooo, my drive back home may be on the snow...I have good tires, but not snow tires. Any driving advice ? (That will make it 911 technical forum material ).

Yikes!!
I had that happen to me last spring 80 miles away.

What tires do you have? If they are High performance summer they are not gonna like the cold temps. My Fuzion's were like ice skates, even in just a couple of inches of wet slushy snow.

If they are more of an allseason tire, you may be ok.

The tires are Khumos ectsa, I think they`re all season. Got those V channels to evacuate the water from center to sides. I`ll have to just take it easy...

Hopefully, it will be cleaned up by the time you leave. With temps close to or above freezing it won't stick.

I got stuck in a blizzard one winter before I changed over to my winter wheels and tires. 6 inches of snow on the road when I headed home on the Bridgestone SO3's. We have some really steep hills around here. Lots of slip sliding, but it would actually make it (slowly) up every hill.

With my Blizzaks I feel like I have 4 wheel drive.

Watch out for the salt trucks! If New Jersey is anything like Ontario, there'll be 2 inches of snow on the road with 5 inches of salt over top!

911's do NOT turn in the snow... never had trouble getting up and going and I was on Z rated Dunlop SP 8000's... but when you go to turn you better be going slow. If you can, go fill it up with gas before you go anywhere and put any other weight you can on the front in the trunk for your drive home. Just take it easy and you will be fine...

... this assumes your defroster works! and you have heat! Neither of which I had at the time... bbbbrrrrrrrrr

i know the heat lever on the floor but have zero clue about the sliders on the dash...

Normally, I think defrosting is all sliders to the right. But in my case, it blows only cold air to the windshield. I don`t know if that is related with my recent heat backdate...I get good heat to the feet though. I`ll get a few wipes just in case. And a brush to clean the car too...

The Swedish rally driver Björn Waldegård always claimed that the 911 was far better than other contemporary cars in snow. Mostly because of the outstanding traction.

However, I suppose your car is not set up like his car was and that he was not referring to driving in traffic. So even if you are as accomplished a driver as Mr. Waldegård was...it may be prudent to really go by the old saying - slooooow into the bends.

Be safe!

Hey buddy, im at work in Maplewood NJ (near exit 143 gsp) in my 911 as well (daily driver, Kumho Ecsta ASX all season high performance tires).

You can be rest assured that after work you will not be in this alone. (30-40 mile drive back home).

And yes, i did enjoy wiping the fog off my windows on the way in this morning while i was driving in the downpour.

911 are fine in snow. If you are in traffic you shouldn't be driving fast enough to really have scares anyway, except for other's stupidity. In that latter case, your cars dynamic traits will be exemplified.

The key to driving a car safely in low traction conditions (on a public road) are the same for whatever car you have. Remember, all cars have 4-wheel-brakes. Just be smooth and anticipate everything.

Last of all, try not to brake too hard if you don't need too. The guy behind you may not have the same traction as you, especially near intersections. It is much safer to go through a late yellow than slam on brakes. The cars getting the green also have low traction so it is not like they will be gunning through the intersection. When living in Chicago, it amazed my that people tended to brake more aggresively than needed when it was snowing. Often slamming on their brakes so they didn't go through a yellow light. Never onec do I think those people thought of those behind them.

I work in North Brunswick, 30 miles north-west of Red Bank. The snow has turned to rain now, and is melting.

I drove a beetle without heat through 2.5 michigan winters (cat-sized holes in floor pan sidelined it eventually). It was a fantastic snow car until it got 6+" deep, then the front would catch on every rut and the car was all over the place. I had 245/60's on "wagon wheels" in back, so the rear tires were 911-like.

And, when desired, lots & lots of sideways fun! I used to practice the "Rockford Maneuver" in parking lots after a fresh snow ...

I made it home with no problem, but the defrosting sucks. Making it work correctly will probably be my next project. Weak defrosting on the SC is the main incentive against inclement weather driving, IMHO.
