Tail light mystery putty?
Hi guys.
I did a couple searches and didn’t come up with anything, so here’s my dumb question. I’m replacing the tail light lenses on my 1988 cab today, and ..well, it’s starting to turn into a comprehensive tail light restoration project. But enough about that, my question is does anyone know what the grey putty that is used to seal the rear access plate on the tail light housings is? Is this stuff some sort of commonly available automotive sealing putty? If I have the opportunity to use the factory solution I’d just as soon do that rather than get creative. Thanks in advance! ![]() Gary

It almost looks like the putty you would use holding single glass panes on a wood frame.
I just used black silicone for the rear acess of my taillights. I wasn't looking for concours correct. I just wanted it to seal.

If its gray, it may be the same stuff that's used to seal the front fenders to the body.
The name escapes me, but it's expensive and only comes in 25 ft rolls. If you're not tied to the color, the best stuff to use is 3M Strip caulk. It costs about $15.00 for a a box that will last forever. It's black, permanently soft & sticky, and is packaged in 1/4 inch strips, about 8 inches long. There are many strips per box, and the box is about 4x9, and about 3/4" thick. You can get it at most auto body supply stores and probably the better parts stores. It's what I'm using for the same job. Good luck Joe

This link seems to have the right characteristics as described in your post. It is widely available in hardware stores as a conduit thru-wall sealer and can easily be kneaded to any thickness. It sticks well, remains pliable and best of all it is waterproof.

Check with Wurth.
I do not know exactly the name of the product but they have it and probably they supply it to Porsche. |

Known as wire dope officially. Ask any electrician and they will say, "Oh, you mean monkey s#!t." Seriously. Used to seal cable entries into junction boxes, etc. Electrical supply store - $10 = lifetime supply.
