What do you use as a jack??

I still have the jack that came with the car as new but have herd that they can be bent and stuf up the door, so I'm looking at getting a new jack of some type to replace the original one.

I suppose you could get a jackpad--the thing that sticks into the jack receptacle and presents a round pad to jack--and one of those classic pantograph screwjacks. They're pretty light and compact.

I actually use the factory item. Just to get the car up on stands. Not that bad if its in good shape.

I have the factory jack in the truck but have never had to use it in an emergency. At home, I use a floor jack with the pads that go into the frame points.

What SLR is asking is what kind of jack to carry in the car, and that he's heard that the OEM crank-'em-up jack can collapse and bend into the door. Whether that's true or not I don't know, but telling him that you use the OEM jack, or that you use a floor jack at home, isn't helping him...

I see.

I wouldn't have any reservations about using a factory jack that's in good shape to lift the car to change a flat on the side of the road given you take precautions as noted in the owner's manual.

That said, a small floor jack from Sears/Harbor Freight could be carried to serve the same purpose.

Nice call, Shaun!!!

I would believe that jack is pretty lightweight, too?

I've heard the spare is a structural part of the front impact protection. Not sure if it's correct, but something you might want to research.

Well, I am sorry. My observation was simply that the OEM jack may not be all that bad that SLR has heard.

I use the OEM jack from time to time when I'm not in the garage, works fine!

I had a factory jack fail in the past(posted here) the jack was destroyed, but the actual lifting arm, which is a big solid chunk of iron, was used to make a jacking pad insert tool that could be used with just about any type of hydraulic or scissor type of jack. I did obtain a NOS factory jack for cheap, just to have the correct one for the car, but I doubt that I will ever use it, because of the previous jack failure. I have used the new jacking pad and a small bottle jack several times, and it works great. I have also used the pad with a small hydraulic floor jack, it also worked great. Luckily, I have not had the unfortunate need to have to lift the car on the side of the road, but I would not hesitate to use the jack pad and bottle jack, which I carry in the trunk. I would have to really think about using the factory jack, but being that it is still new, I probably would use it if really necessary. Good luck!! Tony.

I now use an electric scissors jack (from Harbor Freight) and the jack pad insert. It works well and is easy on my back.

Best,

Tom

For years I carried a heavy NAPA scissors jack. Then switched to a 944 jack. The '72 factory jack was not specifically to good...except for shows, as part of the factory tools display.

Where can you find the 944 jack to buy and do you still use the jack pad or are you jacking from another point?

$10 in 944 Classifieds...Parts Heaven, etc. as well

the nice thing about the jack RE: placement is you can put it under any reinforced point. of course this jack should only be used for replacing a tire.
