I once had an 82' 911 SC that had such a lock in the driver's door near the latch assembly. It was the alarm.

Yes, it is most likely the factory alarm.
I have it on my 86, still works fine.

Like the others have stated it is the alarm arm/ disarm switch and uses a different key than your door/ ignition key.

The dealer will sell you a complete lock and key. The lock is electrical and not just a simple on off switch but has resistance. Removing or disconnecting the lock from the system will sometime cause the engine not to start. Better to leave the lock in place even if you don't have the key. The German in their infinite wisdom probably didn't think about all the time people forget to remove the key after arming or disarming the alarm and end up breaking the key when they slam the door shut. German engineering, gotta luv it. |

Thats the factory alarm, when armed you have to open the door just enough to disarm it with the key or the alarm goes off.
Setting the alarm also activates fuel cutoff.
