front vibration 1984 911 targa
Had the brakes adjusted several months ago, and after driving 20 miles or so, there is a "grinding/vibrating" noise coming (probably) from the front wheels. The sound continues if car is taken out of gear. If I "touch" the brake pedal, or slightly turn the steering wheel, the sound stops. what's causing this?

Bearings, They are a regularly maintained item like oil changes.
Very easy to do. Search on Adjusting Front Wheel Bearings

At first, I thought it was the wheel bearing, but then it did not do it all the time. I ended up researching on this board and diagnosed it as my calipers. I ended up rebuilding my calipers and noted that one piston was stuck and that pad was down to 20% while the others were all 85%. After the rebuild, it stopped doing it. I ended up rebuilding the rears and noted that another piston was stuck back there also that was grinding down another pad to 1mm. Take a look at your pads or discs and see if there is abnormal wear on them. If you're gonna do a rebuild, try the brake wizard provided here by pelican. Great tool to order parts in one shot. It is a dirty job, but very worthwhile DIY. Good luck! |
