Noisy targa top

Does anyone have any answers to a wind noise coming from the front of the top, and how to get rid of this irritation.

Thank You all for the responses, It is an 82, and I will enclose some pics soon. Does pelican parts sell the seal????

Thanks again

Search for Targa top repairs, tons of info.

In short, has the windshield seal - at the top of the frame been replaced? If so, it's probably the aftermarket one that doesn't fit. Search the threads, you'll find the guy that also recently remade the correct seal.

Dave

Dave,

Give the newbie a break. Tell him to look for posts by Dan Pechtel. Also, depending on what year he has, the Dan;'s seal may or may not be needed.

Humyu6: What is the year of your car? It would be very helpful to all of us if you include your car model and year in your profile (or signature line) in addtion to your location.

I couldn't remember if it was Dan and did not want to mislead. Nor did I remember how to spell Dan's last name. I wasn't trying to be too hard on Humyu6. Really.

The top needs to be pretty flush with the windshield frame. It sounds like yours might stick up. There are different adjustments you can make depending on which area of the top is raised too far.

I just got my new top from Dan last week. He does really nice work. I haven't had a chance to drive the car with the new top yet, but I'm hoping with the really tight fit it had, the wind noise will be greatly reduced. And hopefully the leaking too!

Check out carsincnj.com for his info.

Check out your door windows too. My stops need to be adjusted and if I raise the windows to their top position they will actually push the top up a bit and create a gap for wind noise. So I always have to stop them just short. It's kind of annoying, I really need to fix this.

Humyu6:

There is a targa top manual available (hopefully someone here can e-mail it to you) that may help. Might want to post pics of the car with the top on so we can see how it sits.

Good luck!

Paul.

Don't forget the seal at the rear edge. Changing mine cut about 40% of the squeaks and groans emanating from the Targa roof.

Humyu6,

I know that you're in California, but Dan Petchel at Cars Inc. in NJ is THE MAN when it comes to Targa tops. I have no affiliation other than the fact that he recently refurbished mine for me, but he is also a wealth of knowledge. He is also the only source I know of for the correct windshield seal for Pre-1990 Targas.

Good luck.

For a quick fix you can use weather stripping bought from your local hardware store. I used the 1/8th in thick x 3/4 inch stripping for both the front and back paying special attention not to get the top higher than the windshield. I used a heavy brick to settle the top down into the weather stripping to get a snug no wind leaking fit. This will get you there until you can get it fixed correctly
Later on
Tom

Thank You

Mine did the same until I replaced the small triangular clips that hold the the top edge to the frame. To tell if thats the problem...lift the top off slightly after driving and see if the clips are all catching the edge as needed. If not, PP has the improved, slightly longer clips for sale. Replaced three clips on mine...problem gone.
