Opinion please on 3rd gear problem -middie.

I have a 76 911 and I am like a lot of you.. I could never own a new porsche.. too rich for my blood.. actually I could but choose not to..

I do all of my work. I have rebuilt motors. But NEVER a trans.

So my poor little porcha crunches into third gear down and up.. unless I double clutch.. I replaced the fluid with spectum or whatver its called and it made no difference.. but the blue color makes me feel good.

Problem is is when I want to drive the car in a spirited fashion I forget about the double clutch.. I dont drive the car much but when I drive it I'd like to play a bit.. I used to race a ton and know how to match revs and all that crapola but it doesnt matter it still crunches and when I forget its a nasty crunch at high R's.

Okay so my question..

How hard would it be to crack the transaxle and make this repair myself? I assume Id be doing all the syncros. How many special tool will I need? And what is the likely-hood someone like me could pull it off?

And more importantly Id like to know if you all think I should just live with this rather than do the work. Maybe put something on the dash that says double clutch third and let it go?

I would love to hear from a shade tree who has gone for it and done this job...

I would also like to point out that the 76 is probably the cheapest 911 you can buy and it is a joy to drive for anyone wanting to get into a fun galvanized 911 with no rust.

thanks for your advice.

Start with the simple stuff. Replace the shifter and coupler 'bushings'. Check/replace your motor/tranny mounts. Make sure the shift lever is properly aligned.

I've done all the linkage.. but not the motor mounts or tranny mounts. In experience mounts wont cause a this sort of problem unless its during high speed cornering.. correct me if I am wrong about that.

Isnt the double clutch a dead giveaway that this is a syncro?

Sounds like a syncro to me. I think your diagnosis is correct and you will be going into the gearbox.
