Hi
My speedo does wierd things , some times it seems to work OK, odometer as well next time out it sits at about 20 miles an hour no matter what speed your going and the odometer won't clock the miles.Next time nothing or back to normal??? operation. Got the car last Sept. and its been doing this since I got it . The car was brought into Canada and I saw in the bills that the PO had work done to the speedo, as it has to work to pass the import inspection. Traveling now but will be home and want to pull it out but 101 projects has me scared about a short wire connection. You guys that have pulled your before - how much slack did you have, were you able to get the speedo clear of the dash then un hook it? Any help or insights would be appreciated. It's an 87 930. Thanks Scott |

I will give some speedometer advise.
Start cheap, why not replace the sensor on the transmission that signals to the speedo. Also try and clean some grounds. We washed the underside of a friends motor, 87 carrera, all was working well before, but suddenly speedo and ODO were dead. It woke up after things warmed up. The speedo/odo would be dead every morning then suddenly worked. He cleaned all his grounds and changed the speedo sensor on the transmission and all has been good. What fixed it is questionable. Someone had mentioned in a past post that 87 had defective speedometers...I don't know if it's true or not. I still can't get the gauges out of my car, they are in pretty tight. I wanted to send them in to Bigmark to have them refaced with glass and the Speedo recalibrated. Good luck. |

Er.. I'm not sure at the moment but I believe turbos still used CDI in '87.
If they do, the tacho problem could come from the CDI or from a rusty contact. |

Everything you wanted to know about speedometers thread
smokey speedo You should be able to test the sensor with an ohm meter. It is a reed switch that closes 8 (??) times per wheel rotation. I can't think of anything that would disable the odometer stepper motor and put a constant current through the meter to indicate 20 mph.

My speedo's been acting up too. Stopped working yesterday, started working yesterday.
Maybe I'll start with the sender? Mike.

I fixed my problems--needle fluctuations and improper mileage readings--by realigning the wires / unplugging-replugging the connector under the panel in the rear of the car. I'd try something simple before I went ahead and replaced parts.
