Need help in finding agood price to sell my 911 for

The picture above shows how the car would look if someone wanted to triple black it. there is a anodizing place here that can do the wheels for about $400 bucks. So If a buyer wished i could do that work before it was delivered.

I need to sell it though, sadly.
It is a 1979 911 SC coupe. The engine has the carrera chain tensioners, and the pop-off valve. The transmisson was completely overhauled about 1 year or so ago.
It was professionally lowered. Has 17 inch cup wheels. New front bilstein hd strut inserts.
Rear tires about 1 year old.
White dial guauges
Short shift kit
Air conditioner
European headlight assemblies
Sunroof. All of a sudden is not working
power windows and blackout trim
MOMO steering wheel

Body Work done:
Replaced front and back bumpers , bumper shocks, and replaced with Fiberglas yellowbird front and back bumper covers.
replaced the carrera tail with a 3.8 RS split tail fiberglas
Added SKN rocker panels, but jack holes are still fully accessible and the jack hole covers fit in the rocker panel well.

Exhaust:
Heat xchangers from a 1974 911 OEM, with the 1974 911 OEM muffler. I had Storz garage do this work. I kept the oem 79 heat exchangers, muffler as well as old air lines. I also have the air pump (emission pump) and bracket in my garage. i took this off immediately upon getting through emissions here in Colorado.

The vehicle is very tight, and really has no oil leaks, ... EXCEPT the oil filler tube. I noticed that was bleeding a bit on my garage recently.

This little black beauty runs very well, and fires up at just the touch of the key. i just had it realigned again, and it is tracking very straight.


Okay, so I need to sell it and i just wanted to get an idea of what would be a fair price for this considering all of the work it has had done to it.

It does show about 157,000 miles on the ticker

well? anyone out there have any idea?

This beaut only reached $14.6 on E-Bay. It sold for a year ago for $35.5. I had been monitoring it then and it just popped up again now:

Geez, the guy wrote War & Peace about the thing.

That was from the previous owner/seller. He went through the car with a fine tooth comb, leaving no detail un-touched, while turning it in to a "real" 993. If he waited a few more years, he could've bought one for what he had in to it. I think the original asking price was $85k. Eventually he dumped it for $35.5 and now this guy, after spending another $12k thinks he's going to get $43k+http://www.juiced.de/my/images/smilies/rofl.gif I'd gladly give him $20k for it.

Note: I'm not making light of the current sellers situation, however I can't help finding it funny when folks spend a bunch on their car, add that to the price and expect that to be the current value...

Ok thanks a lot everyone, appreciate it. I actually was feeling about $15,000 because I added so many things to it, the exhaust and lowering alone cost me $2,500 at the shop. It is one of those things if i cannot get about $15,000 I'll just keep it. I'd probably consider offers for mid 14,000 minimum I guess.

That 993 convert is amazing! I do think it ids ashamed when we let these cars go for too little. I mean it is a Porsche after all

I bet you could get 15K if the PPI checks out and shows a healthy engine. After all, that is the most important item in my opinion.

I don't think you could get $15K. $12K is reasonable, you might find $13K, but you'll also get 10 times as many offers for $10.5K. What you've added is pretty standard now, and puts you up from a $10K bone stocker to a $12K modified car. If you had a recent engine rebuild, you might get $15K then.

If you read my book, "The Gold Plated Porsche," you'll note that I added about $60,000 worth of "so many things" to an '83 SC. Will I get a dime of it back? Nope, though I did get a book and a fabulous car out of it.

Sorry to say that when one modifies a car it often is not an improvement in the eyes of future buyers. I was in the market last month and eventually found a stock version of the 1988 3.2 carrera. The other candidates I passed up were ones with those heavy 17 incher wheels (a big negative for unsprung weight and no substitute for the OEM Fuchs) and ones with K&N cone air filter housings. Also what you wind up getting is a very narrow spectrum of potential buyers who will share your tastes in mods for your car. Hence the value will be less than that of a mechanically equivalent car that is stock.

On the other hand, you can stick a for sale sign on the car locally and hope for a "non-Porsche" guy to jump on it. I've seen many cars purchased by folks who had no clue (or just don't bother to shop around) and thought they got a good deal. People see my car and think I paid $80k for it. I let them believe what they want.

Note: You're dealing with a tough crowd here. We're all critics!

Thanks more guys! Well I have to say that the mods this car has on it don't seem quite that standard.
let me list them to confirm:

Short Shift Kit
Carrera Chain Tensioners

74 OEM exhaust (heat exchangers and muffler)

Body kit
Fiberglas front, back, tail and rocker panels. Removed the heavy bumpers, bumperettes, bumper shocks, and deleted any reinforcement bars in front, left the back tho. (my thinking is someone may hit me, but i'm not going to hit any body :) i hope)

granted the euro lights are standard (But expensive)
white guauges are minor and to each an opinion

My engine is really tight, so no need to rebuild, but the tranny was completely overhauled about a year or so ago.

When you think of how many hours went into that body kit, in addition to the cost of the kit and supplies and paint, that is worth something. to the right person. If I do end up selling it, I am not sure if i want my next 911 to be anything different than the 79SC, they seem so light? and i hear the 915 tranny revs faster than a g50?

what are your thoughts on the best year of 911 as far as quickness and handling? also dependability.

I hear great things too baout the 83?

Join the crowd. A huge reason I am keeping my 82 SC (rather than selling it to try out another fun car) is that there is a dearth of car buyers with $15K burning a hole in their pocket to buy a 26 year old car. Especially in November with the economy tanking!

Steve, yours is one of the best reads I have ever experienced. Made me feel a whole lot better after only dropping 10K into my car! I know I will never see a dime of that money if I decide to sell my car.

I truly feel sorry for anybody who HAS to sell a car, boat, airplane, etc that would require the buyer to get financing or to have a pocketful of cash. And how about the poor bastards who lost thousands on trading in their truck or SUV when gas was $4+ a gallon and now we are about to see $2 gas?

Yep. Tanked economy is right!!!! Not many buyers are looking for luxury cars, sports cars, SUVs, or trucks in this market. In fact, the whole auto industry is taking a hit that even the government is thinking of helping out. Recession, home foreclosures, companies laying off due to poor sales or overseas outsourcing, stocks dropping, and not to mention Christmas is around the corner.

Personal experience: I had my showroom condition 2006 Toyota Tacoma on the market for 3 months before it finally sold. It had only 15,000 miles, not a scratch on it. Still under factory warranty Sold it for $500 below "low" blue book. Had I sold it a year ago, I could have gotten mid-high blue book. If I had sold it in 2006, believe it or not, I could have actually made money. Trucks were rolling off the lots quickly. However, Toyota and Nissan are NOW dropping production on their full-size trucks. Now if I had a Prius, I'd probably get high blue book even if it were in poor condition.

This buyers market definitely applies to P cars as well. If the OP thinks he'll make back his mods and upgrades, sorry, not going to happen. Better off keeping it until...who knows when. Or cut your losses now and take whatever you can get. That's what i finally had to do with the truck.

Like Steve and others have said and I don't think you really heard, mods/upgrades don't add value, unless on the off chance that someone wants exactly what you've done. Unlikely though. On the other hand, documented solid mechanical work such as engine and tranny rebuilds at mileage-expected intervals by reliable, known P mechanics will help maintain a car's value (not raise it, hold value)! A $20k car with $15k worth of work, doesn't make it a $35 car. It makes it a car more LIKELY to get $20k.

That said, I think you'd be lucky to get $12k. Cuz in the end, it's still a 1979 911 with 157,000 miles.

Beautiful car. Put the SC bumpers back on, the Fuchs and lose the wing and you will attract a lot more buyers. I have to agree with everything else that has been said above.

Ok, I just have to comment about something, and i know not everyone will agree...

Before the body kit was on, while it had all SC stock stuff, I never once received a compliment on my car. After the kit was added I received a compliment on the car almost everywhere I went.

I know there are many purists out there, but I am not one. I love the car, but think it looks more modern, and more aggressive with the body kit. When I autocross it It is a bit quicker off than the stock SC's, and i think it is because it has lost some weight.

Those stock SC bumpers are so freaking heavy...

FinallyGotOne. I think you're absolutely right. My SC, which looks somewhat like an IROC RS, stuns people when I tell them it's a quarter-century old. Of course that really doesn't add to the ultimate value...

As for the economy tanking and expensive cars not selling, I put 200 miles on a Bugatti Veyron last week--a million and a half dollars--and their sales haven't slowed a bit.

With 157k on the engine and no documented rebuild, plus the modifications (no Fuchs, white gauges, etc.), $12K is optimistic. I think you could get it, but that would be max.

$11K if you black out the wheels.
