Quick question - Remove windshield to get the dash out?
I have some cracks in my 71T dash and I looking to do a DIY job to repair.
Does the windshield need to be removed to get it out? Thanks in advance. Andy |

What? No ja?
|
odd, isn't it....
|
no ja, da
|
Not an easy job. Why are you doing it, crack repair?
|
yes, I would like to repair a few cracks on the top.
The car is a track car, so I am not overly concerned. I just do not want to go through removing the windshield. I read up on your experience and was thinking of trying a variation of it. Andy |

The only dashboard that can be removed without taking out the windshield that I know of is the '65-'66 with "buttons". The buttons are plastic covers which stick on the face of the mounting screws. |
Okay, so my question is......once the windshield is out, (my 1982 911SC) then my bentley manual states to take the 5 scews along the forward edge of the dash by the defrosters out, yup, did that, then Bentley says "take 7 nuts off the back side to remove the dash." (they don't show diagram or arrows/pictures"
Do you have to gut all your henting/ventilation gear to access these 7 nuts? Are they on the "Bottom side, of the flat mounted top dash"? or more on the vertical fire wall where the dash gauges are mounted? I'm lost at this step, can't find the nuts, and its driving me nuts. thanks for any tips. |
I'm guessing that its referencing the nuts that you access from the trunk area. I can't recall 7 of them though. One on each corner of the dash, one each on either side of the the dash vents and I think two in the area in between the vent and passenger nuts. Must be one more between the drivers side of the dash vent and the guage pod.
Some are a little fiddly to get at but not too bad. Reach towards the dash from the trunk and feel around. Start with the ones in the extreme drivers and passenger side corners to get an idea of where they are located. |

OK what? Ive pulled many dash covers off without pulling the windshield on 72 and up cars.
(dont know about earlier ones because i personally have not done one.) |
dash covers? i.e. aftermarket things
or dashes? |
Dashes. Why would you have to remove the windshield? When i thought deeper about it, some of the ones I did already had the windshield out, but some didnt.
|
My 66 without buttons can be removed with windshield in place. Not sure what to tell you!
|
Rattisnack, that would be an interesting info.....how you removed the dash without removing the WS?
|
dash removal
I am just in progress of assembling my 72T
there are 5 sheet metal screws which hold the front of the dash down. You can't get to those with out removing the wind shield , than there are 5 studs which go through the vertical part of the dash. Some of the outside once you can reach easy, but the center once are hidden by the ventilation system. It's not a fun job. We have a company in Calgary which is mobile and they come to you and can actually fix the dash when it is in the car. check if you have such a company in your home town. |
Here are a few pictures that may help. The car shown here is a 73, and I believe the dash cover to be a late seventies/early 80’s oem replacement, because of the integrated speaker grill.
The two pics of the under side show seven studs - Five across the face, and two extending downward in the instrument cluster area. There are also seven plastic clips running just behind the leading edge. These plug into corresponding holes in the chassis dash. The holes are filled with soft plastic receptacles that accept the clips. In the pics, two of the pins/receptacles are black, and the rest are white because I bought them at different times, but they are essentially the same thing. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231081140.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231081179.jpg In the chassis picture below you can see some of the receptacles and the defroster ducts in place. The defroster ducts just snap in/out and it’s very easy to break the pins off of them, so be careful there. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231081252.jpg If these were the only attachments, I might be able to remove and install the dash cover with the windscreen in place, but --- there are several sheet metal screws that run along the leading edge and thread into the angled surface at the front of the chassis dash, just behind the cowl. These are also referenced by Fritz. You can see one of the screw holes in the chassis picture just slightly east northeast of the passenger side defroster vent. If you squint you can make out the corresponding holes in the leading edge of the dash cover. I don’t know of any way to remove or insert these screws with the windscreen in place. There is virtually zero clearance. Hope this helps. Joe |
thanks for your reply; at this point i wonder how he did it without removing the windshield.
Is this a dirty way to say "change the windshield seal everytime that you wanna fix your dash ? :P |
