What muffler should I get, 3.2

Looking to do some upgrades to my stock 89 3.2, so the muffler/exhaust is first. What products should I be looking at for performance, beauty and sound? Any help would be appreciated!

Throaty sound one....go with M&K...a refined sound one...go with Monty. My 2 cents one.

Not sure If I would use that anaolgy for a 1in muffler as they both sound rfinded but throaty at different RPMs. However when looking for a muffler I would only look at those two brands and I am biased to 1 but that goes without saying

I am not QUITE as biased as Ben. Best bank for the buck is M&K for sure. Superior quality materials, superior workmanship, and unrivaled customer service.
Several styles to choose from including custom one off. They may not be the cheapest on the market, but you get what you pay for in my opinion. I have made a few mods to my car and this muffler is without a doubt my favorite.

I have a one in, one out M&K muffler installed for a year and have been very happy, good sounds in all RPM's, but not obnoxious.

Ben has good customer follow through...

I loved the M&K I installed on my (since sold) 1984 Cabriolet, but it was pretty bloody loud. The first time I pulled up to my friend's house after installing it, she said: "What the hell happened to your car?" and almost immediately lost any interest in being seen in it. And although I kinda dug it, I did feel a little, well... sophomoric at times.

Maybe it's better with a coupe, because you'll hear it less. Or maybe it's better with a catalytic converter, which mine did not have. But in a cabrio without a cat, it was damn loud.

Ben, you guys should build a cat bypass pipe that is a resonator of some sort, for those of us who want a little less noise. Any chance of that? Because I loved the muffler in every other way, and the fit and finish of the piece were magnificent.

He dose. I think it is called a pre muffler.

Another option is to add a second tail pipe to your existing muffler on the other side. It can look like the driver side or another idea is to keep it tucked up under the stock valance. Then if you want it to sound stock again, you can cap it.

From the info I have seen modifying your muffler makes as much as any aftermarket sport muffler with few exception.

A cat bypass is good for 5-8 hp and a sport muff for that much again. A SW chip makes it much better still.

We dynoed two 3.2 Carreras that both had SW chips & bypass and the only difference was a Bursh Sport muffler. We saw about a 7hp difference.

I quite like the Monty, and Fabspeed has been a popular option for some at various times (though when I had narrowed it down to these two, I went for the Monty, and have been pleased with that decision when later having the chance to compare the two on similar cars).

As far as the loudness factor is concerned, your driving an 70's or 80's porsche, don't expect it to be as quiet a 2008 lexus or honda. When it comes to our cars, it's not a difference of quiet or loud. It's about HOW LOUD your exhaust is.

As far as carolinatrophy's comments, with all due respect, i can appreciate the fear of being too loud but keep in mind it was a girl that commented on the loudness. My girlfriend thinks my exhaust is loud too, but she drives a Toyota Yaris. Without starting a war i dont think any man would really think an MK is too much. Also, the loud MK's are the first gen with no internal baffling. I believe ben is up to 5th gen with baffling for guys that want something quiet. But honestly 1st gen isn't really that loud.

However, there are options for a healthy 3.2 carerra, you want a free-flowing exhaust, and chip.

Chip options:
Search pelican - "Steve Wong" or visit 911chips.com
911max seems to be another option, and from what i've read, isn't so agressive on timing as the "other chip maker" It's all preference.
I did my research, and from what i read, i ended up going with the Steve Wong chip. Do a search for yourself.

Exhaust Options (in order of soft to loud sounding):
1 Cat + Stock Muffer = Quiet
2 Cat Bypass + Stock Muffler = Modest
3 Cat + Sport Muffler = Modest with Balls
4Cat Bypass + Sport Muffler = Balls (preferred by most carrera owners including me)
5 SSI + Sport Muffler = Balls to the Wall
Options 2 and 4 are the most common, and you can get a Steve Wong chip from 911chips.com on the website for any of these configurations. Get a chip and exhaust for your Carrera.

By the way, during my fathers young adulthood, he once knew a guy from New York when he lived there that welded the fuel tanks for NASA for the space shuttles when uncle sam would knock on his door and needed his expertise. He's welded plenty of material for my father as well for his automobile projects. Now i can tell you that when my father looked over my MK muffler when it arrived in the mail, he was VERY impressed.
