Hello, I have an '82 SC and have a tire pressure situation/question. Since owning it for nearly a year, I didn't check pressure and she rode fine, like on rails. Was a little hard on the bumps, but thought that was just the nature of the beast.
Last week I decided to check the pressure and adjust the pressure according to spec (29 psi in front and 34 psi in rear). I came down to these levels from 39 psi all around. I was excited to see how nice of a ride I would have. Problem: now the steering seems "squirrelly", I can feel the car oscillating back an forth all the time. Has anyone else had this situation, and any input on this would be appreciated. thanks, Bill |

What is the size of your tires OEM or 17"?
Is it squirrelly when up to temp or when cold? Higher filled tires tend to make the car stiffer and steer lighter but will wear them out faster. Once up to "Warmed Up" the front tires will increase in pressure 5-6 lbs on the track even higher. Try 32/38, it should improve. my 2 cents

tire pressure is something you adjust -- within limits - to make the car handle the way you want
I run 30/32 in my '73 -- and in a Boxster. That is what Todd Serota (a knowledgeable DE Instructor) said to do a decade ago and interestingly, it works well for the mid-engined car as well as the early 911. |

I run 32/34 in an SC (heavier than a 73), which is also what Todd Serota recommended back then ;-)
The other day on track I was told to try even lower pressures by a local hot shoe, like 29/32 or so... Seems pretty low to me - it worked on track but I am not sure it would have worked on the street.... Generally manufacturers err on the side of caution and making the car safe (i.e numb). My 996 had 44PSI recommended for the rear wheels, it felt like balloons until I dropped it to 36 ! ;-) |
