Distributor Pin

Just got the pin for holding the gear on at the bottom of the distributor shaft for my 88 3.2 but wanted to get some suggestions on exactly how to install it. It has three "cuts" down the side with get deeper towards one end, making it slightly wider in diameter than the other end. Do I use a punch on BOTH ends to enlarge them and tighten it up or do I push it through till the slightly wider side is snug, then use a punch or similar tool to widen the other end? I was thinking it would be best if it's "centered" and not sticking out either side more than the other.
TIA
